Release Day for Root

I’m pleased to announce that Root (Band Nerd 2) is out today!

root_200x300

Blurb:

Until I joined the Marching 300 at Sauvage State University, I was just too-tall, tuba-playing Lena Leblanc. But college changes everything. Suddenly I have friends, and they won’t let me dodge the attraction I have for hulking, Viking-like football player Anders De Groot. He makes me feel; makes me believe that I’m more than a burden to others. That I’m more than just Lena. And for a girl whose mother checked out years ago, that’s the scariest feeling of all.

Before I met Lena, all I had was school and football; study and stadiums full of spectators cheering for “Root!” Now, I can’t get her out of my head. She’s everything I could possibly want in a woman and I need to prove to her how good we’ll be together. I need to show her that, no matter what, she’s perfection. My perfection. And I’ll stand my ground to make sure nothing ever hurts her. Not even her family.

See what I mean? How can he even be real? So impossibly sweet and hot? But with my stepfather threatening us, I’ll have to learn how to step up and fight for what I want. Otherwise I’ll lose the greatest thing to ever happen to me.

By the way, if you haven’t picked up Steady (Band Nerd 1) yet, be sure to do that soon. It’s on sale for just .99 until October 7th to celebrate the release of the second book in the series!

Blurb:

Everyone may call me “Steady” but recently my life has been all chaos. I went from Shaun Decker, NFL star, to being forced to retire and finding out my wife’s having an affair. Coaching for the Sauvage Spartans’ football program will be perfect for getting my life back on track. Then a delicious woman named Katie literally falls into my lap and then, after the best sex of my life, disappears.

I’m Katherine Frost, band nerd turned band director and, oh, apparently a magnet for married men. Discovering I’m the other woman already had me rethinking my life, then my one-night stand turns out to be married too. Gah! I want nothing to do with men ever again. Especially tall, handsome, bearded men named Shaun. I thought taking up a teaching position at Sauvage State was a strategic exit, stage left, but it’s looking more like going from the frying pan into the fire.

Hey, Shaun again. Don’t let her kid you. Fate puts people in the right place at the right time because they’re meant for each other. Football and marching bands go together, just like me and Katie. I just need to convince her of that.

I’m feverishly working to finish Dasher’s story so I can submit it to my publisher in time for the holidays. After that? Well, who knows? Maybe (just maybe) wrap up my sci-fi serial. But never fear, there will be plenty more Band Nerd books in 2017!

Love,

Danica

A Perfect Song

I’m back again! If I keep this up, I might end up blogging every day! I don’t think so though LOL

If you’ve followed my ramblings over the  years, y’all should know by now that I associate nearly everything with music. People, places, events, etc. I do the same thing when I write. Usually I just let my playlist roll through songs while I write, but with the second book in the Caressed by Starlight serial, there’s one song I actually didn’t listen to much because it isn’t in my playlist. I would hear it in the car. A lot. As in nearly every time I would get in the car and it happened almost exclusively while I was writing Adding Tyn.

Each time I heard it, it made me think of Tyn-Hy the Cold. As with most books I write, I start out with an idea of what my characters are like and let them show me who they really are. That’s what happened with Adding Tyn. I thought I knew who this cyborg was. I didn’t know the half of it! He was a lot more complex than I intended, with an internal struggle that broke my heart for him and for the target of his desires, En’Daria.

So today I’m going to share the song that I would swear Three Days Grace wrote for him, it’s that perfect for the story.

CoverWill his call of duty break both their hearts?

Losing her father in Desert Storm has left Stephanie James with a bitter soul when it comes to the military. As a college senior juggling a full course load, Steph’s only goal is to graduate with honors at the end of the semester. She’s focused, determined, and a firm believer in all work and no play. Then she meets Brandon Walker at a New Year’s Eve costume party. Despite his disguise, Steph finds herself attracted to the camouflaged soldier who curls her toes with a scorching midnight kiss.

Brandon is an engineering major and ROTC student from the hills of Kentucky. Growing up as the son of a major general has given Brandon firsthand knowledge of the struggles military families sometimes face. Now that his father’s memory is fading, Brandon is even more determined to make his dad proud and graduate as an officer in the United States Army. Then he meets Stephanie, and suddenly, his focus is less on his military service and more on the pretty brunette who has stolen his heart. When he becomes aware of Steph’s resentment toward the military, he worries their relationship is doomed.

When faced with the realization that she’s fallen in love with a soldier, can Steph’s wounds from the past be healed with love in her present . . . and in her future?

“You never answered my question,” Brandon says.

The movie ended an hour ago, but we haven’t moved from the couch. I’ve never understood why couples make out in the backseats of cars. Couches are so much more comfortable.

“Which question was that?”

“Who could you date?”

“Hmm.” I pretend to ponder. I mean, really, shouldn’t it be obvious by now? “Someone who is kind-hearted. Someone who walks old ladies to the door of the coffee shop. Someone who looks sexy in a paisley apron.”

He smiles. “What about a Kentucky Wildcats fan? Could you date one of those?”

It’s a fair question, considering my Indiana roots and my love for Hoosier basketball.

I wrinkle my nose. “I suppose.”

“Good to know.”

—————————————————–

Excerpt #8:

“How was your run?”

Brandon sits down beside me. “It was good. Why are you up so early?”

“I love the Kentucky sunrise. I’m going to miss it.”

“I’ll miss it, too.”

“I was just wondering if a Georgia sunrise would be just as pretty.”

“I don’t see how.”

I smile. “And the bed was cold.”

“Steph, it’s summer.”

“The bed was still cold.”

He grins and leans over, kissing me on the cheek.

“I guess I need to get used to it, huh? Cold beds, I mean.”

Brandon dips his head and kisses my shoulder. “I’m afraid so. For the next twelve weeks, anyway.”

“And after that?”

I shouldn’t ask, because I know the answer. After that, if I want a warm bed, we’ll have to get married.

The United States Army won’t let us live in sin.

————————————————————–

Excerpt #10:

Steph suddenly lifts herself up, straddling my waist and sliding her hands along my stomach. Another flash of lightning in the sky shows me what she’s wearing.

It’s my Princess Bride T-shirt, the same one I was wearing the day we met in class.

“Nice shirt.”

“Thanks. I stole it from your closet before you left. I’ve slept in it every night.”

“Thief.”

With a sly grin, she leans down and kisses me again.

“You’ve stolen my clothes. Stolen my heart.”

Steph smiles against my lips.

“There’s something else I want to steal,” she whispers.

I slide my hands along her back, pulling her closer to me as I raise myself up. Wrapping her arms around my neck, she melts against me when I bury my face against her neck.

“I’ll give you anything, Steph.”

“Anything?”

”Whatever you want.”

I lift my head and find her eyes, deep and dark and full of tears. All of her earlier playfulness is gone as she places her palm against my cheek.

“I want your last name.”

The beautiful alien makes his body burn and his heart ache. She will be his. All JB has to do is risk life and limb at the hands of her abusive father, her protective brother, and her warmongering intended mate.

The possibilities of death and dismemberment have never stopped him before.

Inside Scoop:  This book has a small taste of female/female fun—as well as scenes of abuse that are decidedly not fun.

Excerpt:

“Oh Jesus.”

If it weren’t for the tone in Jess’ voice, Saia wouldn’t have been pulled from watching the human male across the room.

Jess placed a hand across her eyes and shook her head slowly.

“Pardon me?”

Jess groaned. “Please, please look at something else.”

Saia let her gaze go back to the male. His black hair was cut short. His blue eyes were framed with an abundance of dark lashes. Light seemed to dance in his eyes as he smiled in her direction.

Is he smiling at me?

She took a quick peek left then right

He’s smiling at me!

Her heart leapt for joy. His graceful smile was only for her. She giggled and placed a hand over her mouth.

“He won’t be satisfied until he’s dead,” Jess muttered.

She turned to Jess. “What are you talking about?”

Jess watched the male across the room as well. But instead of smiling, she made a slow motion across her neck with a finger. “I’m referring to the slow death he’s sure to get if he keeps flirting with you.”

Flirting?

She turned back to the male. No one had ever flirted with her. She smiled again.

“Good gracious, don’t encourage him!”

“Do you know him?”

“Unfortunately, yes.” Jess rolled her eyes. “Maybe I should start saying that I knew him.”

The lights turned low, signaling the beginning of the dinner entertainment. The voices in the dining hall became hushed. Saia strained her eyes to make out the silhouette of the human.

Slow, rhythmic drums began to beat. Light shone from the stage door. One torch, then two, then three, until finally there were six. In the darkness, the torches zipped through the air, swung in circles, tossed and caught.

Every now and again, she could catch a glimpse of him and found that he still watched her as well.

Her heart seemed to thump in time with the drums. His smile had dropped but his stare was intent just the same. His gaze seemed to bore through her. Right to her soul. And she found she enjoyed it.

She leaned over to whisper, “Tell me his name.”

Jess shook her head. “Ignore him like I do most days and watch the show.”

Ignore him? She couldn’t. “But I want to know his name.”

Jess looked at her. “Listen, Princess Saia, this can’t happen.”

“What can’t happen?”

“You and JB. Taio would never allow it. You’re getting married and JB’s going back to Laconia. I’m trying to keep him alive at least until then.”

  1. She turned to look at him again.

Jaybee. What a wonderful name.

“Argh, can you at least get that dreamy look off your face?”

“Is he a slave?”

“No.”

“Is he bonded?”

“No.”

“Can you introduce me to him?”

“Absolutely not.”

“Why?”

Jess raised a brow. “Have you seen the size of your brother?”

Jess was right. Taio was extremely protective of her. That was the very reason why she could never tell him their father had long been striking her and her mother. And she couldn’t forget that she was contracted to bond with Ranuit Pi.

And just like that, an overwhelming sense of dread had ahold of her once again.

There could be no flirting. No smiles from across the room as she’d heard described on many occasions from people who had fallen in love. Her fate belonged to someone else.

Working WoMan

It’s only Wednesday but it’s already been a chaotic week. I’ve developed a frown line since at least the beginning of the year and it’s deep. I’ve been experimenting with different brooding/frowny faces that won’t make it bigger, but every time I find myself frowning, it’s always this “WTF” look on my face, eyebrows raised and forehead all furrowed. Because that’s the way I tend to look for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.

Meh. I have exciting stuff going on in my writer’s life, but I’ve been so exhausted from the EDJ that I barely even enjoy that part of my life. I haven’t written since Sunday I think. *think* Or Saturday? I can’t remember. The only really good thing is that I’m halfway through the story I need finished before the end of the month. Yay.

Yeah, I’m so tired I can’t even write a long post today. My brain is back in my bed dreaming of work. Because apparently that’s what I do now. I don’t dream of being the meat in a Gerard Butler and Vin Diesel sandwich. I dream about my day job.

Can someone please tell the weekend to get here soon? Yeah, thanks.

And in light of this crushingly stressful week, I’m playing y’all some Rush. “Working Man” seemed fitting for my mood today. It isn’t my favorite Rush song, but it’s still good stuff.

Happy Hump Day!

Writing Hangover

If you follow me on Facebook, you might have seen me mention something about cranking out 12k words this weekend. I haven’t done that in months. Mostly because I’ve been swamped by real life and the evil day job. I’ve been trying to sit down for weeks to pound out Primal Dance, the next book in the Cajun Heat series and last week I had every intention of working on that story.

But on Thursday night as I went to bed, I began to brainstorm a completely different story. A contemporary with not a single paranormal character in sight. Even better, it’s a menage a quatre. I know, are y’all shocked? I’ve written a menage before, but this one is really stepping out of my “comfort zone”. On top of that, each of the male characters are anti-heroes. Each and every single one is a bad boy.

And even better, the whole story is loosely based on a very popular book and musical. I’m not going to say which one it is because I’m still in the “with-this-seekrit-project-I-will-rule-the-world” phase of writing. You know, when you’re positive this story is going to be the one that has people storming the virtual book stores to get a copy of it. Heh. Or should I say Muhuhahahaha!?

Anyway, I’ve been working on this story for…three days? Since Friday at least, but Friday was mostly spent on research. My writing method is that I must have character names down and a title for my stories before I can work on the book. However, all I managed to get were the character names before they demanded I start writing. I still have no title for this story, but I’m actually okay with that. Weird, huh? But it didn’t matter because my muse has finally shown up. Y’all know how she is. She was out partying with hotties and forgot all about me, leaving me to flounder on my own. But she’s back now and she’s putting me through my paces, demanding I write, write, write. The last time this happened, I wrote a 80k story in 25 or 28 days. Something wild like that, edited and revised. Yeah. She really knows how to make me work and I wish she’d stop being such a hooker.

So for now, I’ve had to put Primal Dance on the side to concentrate on this contemporary. I’m sorry for my readers who are waiting on Coltrane and Kanda’s story. It’s coming, just a little later than I’d originally planned. Don’t worry though, it will happen. And if I’m lucky, I’ll have the final book in the series ready shortly after. (But I’m not lucky so…)

Oh and before I forget, today kicks off the start of another blog tour of Touched by Lightning. I’m giving away 2 sets of prizes (Order of Themis travel mugs, swag and gift cards). I have some guest posts and interviews as well as reviews mixed in there so be sure to check it out and enter to win!

Touched by Lightning Playlist 5

I really meant to blog Monday and Tuesday, but forgot. Things have been insane. I’m just glad I remembered to blog today!

I can thank Avenged Sevenfold for that. They’re coming to Lafayette in April and I want to go because I love their music, but they helped me blog today because thinking about them reminded me of this song which was one of the frequently played songs while I was writing Touched by Lightning.

But before I get to that, I just wanted to let y’all know that beginning March 1st, I’m taking part in the TRR (The Romance Reviews) Anniversary Party. That’s right, not only do I have another blog tour starting on the 3rd with prizes, but I’m also giving away an ebook copy of Touched by Lightning to the winner of my Q&A on TRR’s site. So I have two buttons for you to check out when the time is right. On Friday I’ll post the schedule for the blog tour which begins on Monday. Is that confusing enough? LOL

anniv2014

Touched by Lightening Button 300 x 225

So back to the song.

Again, I love Avenged Sevenfold. And not just because I’m crushing hard on several of the members. *cough* Their music works for me when I’m writing. I could probably list an easy half-dozen songs that I listen to while I’m working, but when I think back to certain moments in the book, I recall this song being one that stood out the most. My heroine has had to become tough due to her past. She’s afraid to trust, but in the end, she has to actually make herself vulnerable.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but this whole book is about second chances and working for your own happiness. It’s dark. I know I’ve said that before, but I’m not sure people realize just how dark it is. And I did that on purpose because without that darkness, that pain, how can you truly appreciate the beauty of the second chance Gyda’s been given? Ah well, I hope when readers are in the story they realize there’s a method to my madness.

Anyway, today’s song is Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold. Enjoy!

Bio: Danica Avet was born and raised in the wilds of South Louisiana (that would be somewhere around Houma) where mosquitoes are big enough to carry off small children and there are only two seasons: hot and hotter. With a BA in History, she figured there were enough fry cooks in the world and decided to try her hand at writing.

Danica is the lucky pet of a compulsively needy dog and two cats. The pitter-patter of little feet has been known to make her break out into a cold sweat.

Writing is how she gives the voices in her head a way out. When she isn’t writing, working or contemplating the complexities of the universe, she spends time gathering inspiration from her insane family, reads far more than any sane person would want to, and watches hot burly men chase an oblong ball all over a field.

Lovely Friday

I started off this week sick as a dog, but I’m so glad it’s Friday I could almost dance. Almost because this girl does not have the moves like Jagger. Not at all.

Of course because it’s finally the end of the week, it means I’m about to start up yet another week of training. That’s a good thing, right? Learning is always good. If I can keep my eyes open. The only really great thing I can think of to make up for being away from home and my bed a whole week is I get to spend it with my aunt and uncle. I’ve already put in my request for as much kimchee, bulgogi and other Korean dishes as I can possibly think of. Oh yeah, Danica is going to eat well next week.

The worst part of having been sick this week is I didn’t really get to celebrate the release of my erotic menage, Sweetest Taste of Sin. Sure, I posted about it on Twitter and Facebook, but I didn’t do the whole Happy Release Day to me! thing I normally do. So I’m going to do that now.

Yay! Happy Belated Release Day to me!

Okay. Phew, glad that’s over. Well not really. I’m going to post the blurb and buy links as well as my Friday song. *think* I had a few on tap when I started this post but I think it’ll have to be the song that made me think of the title for this short story. Ne-Yo’s “Closer” is such a good dance song and of course it gave me the idea for the book.

And here it is…Sweetest Taste of Sin.

SweetestTasteofSinARe

Logan Guillory finally has what she’s always wanted, a loving, sizzling relationship with J.B. Calhoun. So why can’t she shake her overwhelming need for his twin brother Anthony? Her small town morals tell her it’s not normal to love two men with equal fervor, but not even the risk of damaging her standing in Grand Terre, Louisiana can make her stop wanting to be possessed by them both.

Anthony ‘Ant’ Calhoun had his eye on Logan long before his brother entered the picture, but now he’s lost his chance, or so he thinks. J.B. has other ideas, which includes sharing Logan’s sensual caresses and big heart with his brother. Torn between overwhelming need and fear of the scandal that might ensue, Ant resists with all his might, but doesn’t stand a chance against the needs of the two people he loves most.

Giving in threatens everything they all hold dear, but who can resist the sweetest taste of sin?
