Bio:

From an early age, USA Today Bestselling Author Melissa loved to read. First, it was the books her mother read to her including her two favorites, Winnie the Pooh and the Beatrix Potter books. She cut her preteen teeth on Trixie Belden and read and reviewed To Kill a Mockingbird in middle school. It wasn’t until she was in college that she tried to write her first stories, which were full of angst and pain, and really not that fun to read or write. After trying several different genres, she found romance in a Linda Howard book.

Since the publication of her first book in 2004, Melissa has had close to fifty romances published. She writes in genres from historical suspense to modern day erotic romance to futuristics and paranormals. Included in those releases is the bestselling Harmless series. In 2011, Melissa branched out into self-publishing with A Little Harmless Submission and the popular military spinoff, Infatuation: A Little Harmless Military Romance. Along the way she has garnered an epic nomination, a multitude of reviewer’s recommended reads, over five Capa nods from TRS, three nominations for AAD Bookies and regularly tops the best seller lists on Amazon and Barnes & Noble.

Since she spent her childhood as a military brat, Melissa swore never to marry military. But, as we all know, Fate has her way with mortals. She is married to now retired AF major and is raising her own brats, both human and canine. She spends her days giving in to her addiction to Twitter and spends her days thankful for their new home and the short trip to Wegmans.

Excerpt:

Logan rolled over trying to get comfortable in his bed, but he knew it was useless. His brain wouldn’t shut off. The trip ahead, not to mention his companion, had him antsy. He couldn’t seem to quit thinking about the way she had looked tonight, the way she had smiled at him, and the sound of her voice. He had been truthful when he said that he hadn’t been lured by it. But…now he couldn’t get it out of his head.

He slipped out of bed. After stretching the kinks out of his back, he pulled on a pair of pajama bottoms and a t-shirt, and decided to have some tea and biscuits. As he made his way to the kitchen, he started to make a mental list of places he wanted to visit while they were in Paris.

It had been a few years since he’d been there. He knew they were there for the quest, but there was no reason he couldn’t enjoy the art. It would be more convincing for their cover story. He might even take Meg to a place or two.

Thinking back to his last trip, he wondered if they had been there at the same time. The timing was pretty close so they would have to compare notes. There is one thing he knew without a doubt. If they had come into contact with each other, he would have remembered her.

It was hard to ignore Meghan. With the riot of honey brown curls that spilled down her back, those amazing whiskey brown eyes, and the curvy body she showcased proudly, most men took notice. But, there was another quality, something beneath the surface that he could not seem to comprehend. That is, if she wasn’t irritating him.

He shook his head as he stepped into the kitchen.

He was not alone.

Standing at the stove, dressed all in red, was Meg. There was only the light above the stove to light the room.

Logan watched her for a few seconds. She seemed so alone there, so quiet. Even in a silk robe that screamed seduction, there was a quietness about her Logan had never seen before. He must have moved because she jumped and spilled some of the boiling water on her hand.

“Damn,” she said and dropped the kettle. It crashed against the burner, but he paid no attention to it as he rushed forward.

“Did you get burned?” he asked, as he grabbed her hand.

She tried to wiggle free of his hold. “Well, it was boiling water, so yeah.”

He slipped his hand up to her wrist and tugged her over to the sink. After turning on the cold water, he stuck her hand under it.

“I know how to take care of a burn. I am not an infant.”

He heard the annoyance in her voice, and it rubbed against him the wrong way. He did nothing but come down to the kitchen, and she acted as if he had done something horrible.

“Feel better?” he asked, but he said it from behind clenched teeth.

“Yes.”

Logan noticed she didn’t say thank you. He turned off the water and handed her a towel.

“Mind sharing your water?”

She glanced back over to the pot, then offered him a small smile. “Since you tended my injury, I must be gracious.”

He chuckled. “Were you going to have some tea?”

She nodded. “Mine always sucks though.”

Logan snorted. “American.”

“Yes and proud of it.”

He grabbed some tea and measured it out for two cups.

“But you spend all your time here.”

She sighed. “I have a soft spot for Scotland. And Ireland, oh and Paris.”

The way she said Paris made him think that it made her sad. “But you’ve never been back to Paris since you lived there before.”

“No.”

No other explanation. Of course not. The woman was filled with secrets, but then, he could not accuse her of that. His family was steeped in them.

“Is there any chance that Morin would have people looking for you?”

“No. Well, okay, maybe. I know he keeps someone on the apartment. Last time Rena was there she saw them.”

“And they’re still alive.”

She smiled. “Yes, I told her killing them would only cause me more problems, so she abstained. She was very sad though.”

The half-fae was definitely deadly.

“I know you don’t like me, Logan.”

“I don’t trust you.”

She sighed. “And you don’t trust, which I don’t blame you. You don’t know me.”

Logan didn’t like the sadness in her voice or the way it made him feel. There was something about it that resonated within his soul. He pushed those thoughts aside.

“It doesn’t mean I don’t like you.”

She stilled, then swallowed. When she spoke, she didn’t look at him. “So, you like me?”

Her southern accent deepened. It danced over his nerve endings, sunk into his soul. It did more to him than her singing the night before. Right now, he would fight dragons to the death to make her his.

She shook her head. “Never mind.”

He had been keeping the feelings at bay for weeks. It had taken a lot of his control not to act on the need he had for her. Now, in the dark kitchen, with the silent house around them, he couldn’t resist her. He stepped closer.

“More than is good for me,” he said.

She looked up at him, her mouth half opened. He could smell the spicy scent of her, the one he dreamed about. It lured him unlike anything else before. It was so quiet around them, the peaceful night cloaking them from the rest of the house.

“Then…” she broke off. He held back a groan as he watched her tongue dart out to lick her bottom lip.

“What?” Even he heard the arousal vibrating in his voice.

“Then why do you treat me the way you do? You always look at me as if I disgust you.”

He shook his head. “You doona disgust me. You tempt me when I shouldn’t be tempted. We have no time for being muddle-headed right now.”

“But?”

“Aye, lass, but,” he said, as he slid his hand around her waist and pulled her closer to him.

She fit him perfectly—too perfectly. “I’m tired of resisting.”

He damned them both as he bent his head and kissed her.

Excerpt:

“A-are you okay?”

So she hadn’t left as he’d thought. Her voice was soft and whispery; different from what he’d expected, yet it still oozed strength and moxie to boot. If not for the flickering stars obscuring his vision, and the inability to stand while keeping his stomach where it belonged, he’d paddle her ass for causing him distress.

“How do you think I am after taking a chair to the back of the head?” he groused from his laid-out position on the floor.

Trent spied her feet moving closer to the front door. He needed to rein in his anger and belligerence if he hoped to keep his newly found mate close. She’d suffered a horrifying attack—growling at her would just send her running, but what had stopped her from laying waste to the idiot attacking her. Her shape-shifter strength far exceeded that of some human male.

“Fine—good-bye.”

“NO, wait…” Trent lifted his head sooner than advisable. Stars throbbed in his vision, and his lunch almost succeeded in its bid for freedom. “Fuck!”

She paled, more than he’d thought possible for someone with such fair skin. Her eyes were wide with fear as tiny cries escaped from closed lips. So lovely and all his, but the knowledge of anyone, including himself, hurting her infuriated him.

“What’s your name, beautiful?” Trent asked when he was finally able to move from his hands and knees to his ass.

She shook her head with the slightest of movements, facing him but keeping her back to the door.

“What shall I call you then … mate?”

“Not that! I have no intention of mating with anyone.”

“Funny how fate and Mother Nature take that choice away from us all…”

“Doesn’t matter…”

“Really?” Trent rubbed his thumb and forefinger around the pressure points between his eyes and above his nose. “Why are you still here, beautiful? Morbid curiosity? Want to see if you were strong enough to kill me?”

Meh is for Monday

I’m sure everyone is having that Meh feeling today. Not just because it’s Monday, but also because it’s the first Monday after the time change. Ugh, time changes. I hates them, precious. Why can’t they just leave well enough alone already? We’re nearing summer which means the days will be longer anyway, but no, they have to go and mess with our clocks too. I do not like leaving my house at dark to drive to work, y’all. Makes me feel like an overachiever.

*sniff*

But since I’m pretty sure everyone and their mother is complaining about the time change, I’ll leave it be.

I know I made a vow somewhere about blogging regularly. I really did mean to. Life just gets in the way and honestly, I don’t think y’all want to hear about my boring life, right? I mean, the most exciting thing to happen to me is my 2-year-old nephew claiming I’m the reason he’s cute. Which is totally true. *snort*

Oh, or how about I’ve been so enamored of my current characters that the minute my head hits the pillow I’m bombarded by scenes I want to write with them? They follow me into sleep and wake up with me, yet when I sit down to write, they won’t talk to me. That isn’t exactly true. I do write because they talk to me but I have to end up removing scenes because I only have 25k words to put their story together. If I went with their pace, we’d be looking at a 100k book. That actually might come later for another book in that series, but for now they need to buckle down, fall in love and get busy. Y’know?

What else? *think* Nothing else really. I’m just struggling to find enough time in the day to handle the evil day job, the writing, family time and sleep. Although that last part isn’t so hard to accomplish. It’s the getting up again in the morning that does it LOL

Anyway, how is everyone else? Ready for Spring to arrive or what?

Writing Hangover

If you follow me on Facebook, you might have seen me mention something about cranking out 12k words this weekend. I haven’t done that in months. Mostly because I’ve been swamped by real life and the evil day job. I’ve been trying to sit down for weeks to pound out Primal Dance, the next book in the Cajun Heat series and last week I had every intention of working on that story.

But on Thursday night as I went to bed, I began to brainstorm a completely different story. A contemporary with not a single paranormal character in sight. Even better, it’s a menage a quatre. I know, are y’all shocked? I’ve written a menage before, but this one is really stepping out of my “comfort zone”. On top of that, each of the male characters are anti-heroes. Each and every single one is a bad boy.

And even better, the whole story is loosely based on a very popular book and musical. I’m not going to say which one it is because I’m still in the “with-this-seekrit-project-I-will-rule-the-world” phase of writing. You know, when you’re positive this story is going to be the one that has people storming the virtual book stores to get a copy of it. Heh. Or should I say Muhuhahahaha!?

Anyway, I’ve been working on this story for…three days? Since Friday at least, but Friday was mostly spent on research. My writing method is that I must have character names down and a title for my stories before I can work on the book. However, all I managed to get were the character names before they demanded I start writing. I still have no title for this story, but I’m actually okay with that. Weird, huh? But it didn’t matter because my muse has finally shown up. Y’all know how she is. She was out partying with hotties and forgot all about me, leaving me to flounder on my own. But she’s back now and she’s putting me through my paces, demanding I write, write, write. The last time this happened, I wrote a 80k story in 25 or 28 days. Something wild like that, edited and revised. Yeah. She really knows how to make me work and I wish she’d stop being such a hooker.

So for now, I’ve had to put Primal Dance on the side to concentrate on this contemporary. I’m sorry for my readers who are waiting on Coltrane and Kanda’s story. It’s coming, just a little later than I’d originally planned. Don’t worry though, it will happen. And if I’m lucky, I’ll have the final book in the series ready shortly after. (But I’m not lucky so…)

Oh and before I forget, today kicks off the start of another blog tour of Touched by Lightning. I’m giving away 2 sets of prizes (Order of Themis travel mugs, swag and gift cards). I have some guest posts and interviews as well as reviews mixed in there so be sure to check it out and enter to win!

Touched by Lightning Playlist 6

Well, it’s the last day of February which means it’s the last day of the Touched by Lightning playlist recap. I hope y’all have enjoyed peeking into a little of the world I threw myself in while writing this book. Despite all my warnings about the darkness of the story, I truly love this book. It’s one of my favorite books of all that I’ve written and I can only hope readers see the true meaning behind it.

Before I get to today’s song, I’d just like to remind y’all that I’m participating in two giveaways. One is The Romance Reviews Anniversary Party which begins tomorrow with Touched by Lightning being featured between the 1st and the 5th. There’s a question to answer to win prizes and I hope y’all participate!

Then, Monday starts two weeks of a new blog tour with Bewitching Book Tours. There are guest posts, interviews and reviews coming and I’m giving away 2 Order of Themis travel mugs, 2 $25 Amazon Gift Cards, and 2 sets of Danica Avet swag. It sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun and I hope to see some of y’all there! The schedule is posted below:

And now for the last song of the playlist. Of course it isn’t really the last song. I have a few hundred more to go, but you know what I mean. Everything’s been so dark and gloomy on the blog, I figured I’d better end this theme with a something a little lighter.
If you haven’t read the book yet, you haven’t had the chance to meet Joe. Josephina Daly to be exact. She’s the Director of the Order of Themis and she’s…something. Six feet tall with a penchant for mile high heels, an obsession with fashion, a faithful Irish Wolfhound she named Mr. Dimples and more power than any of the characters I introduced in the rest of the story. She’s a powerhouse, but she’s also strangely sweet and funny and I loved her the instant Lea and I came up with her character. It was so much fun to write her little cameo appearances in the book that I know, just know I’m going to have to restrain myself from writing her story next. Oh yes, she’s getting a story y’all.
Anyway, Joe has a sick sense of humor. Well, maybe not sick so much as warped. She loves to torment her employees with “team building events” like pedicures and full body massages. She adores picking on the big, strong men under her command by having them play princess tea parties with underprivileged kids. She’s awesome LOL
One of the ways she lives to torment her employees is by having the worst elevator music you could possibly want to hear. I picked two songs for different scenes with my hero where he’s in the elevator. And the thing is, I don’t hate these songs. Back in the day, they were the most popular songs on the radio and maybe that’s what draws Joe to them. We all heard them so many times that they’ve almost become a joke. But I’m only going to play one of them. You’ll have to read the book to find out what the other song is 😉
So the final song on the Touched by Lightning playlist is Meatloaf’s “I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)”. I really loved this song back in the day. Classic Meatloaf with all the drama and because Joe is all about drama, it seems to fit her personality. I hope you’ve enjoyed my little trip down memory lane. I’ve had a lot of fun going over my writing process for this book.
Happy Friday y’all!

Touched by Lightning Playlist 5

I really meant to blog Monday and Tuesday, but forgot. Things have been insane. I’m just glad I remembered to blog today!

I can thank Avenged Sevenfold for that. They’re coming to Lafayette in April and I want to go because I love their music, but they helped me blog today because thinking about them reminded me of this song which was one of the frequently played songs while I was writing Touched by Lightning.

But before I get to that, I just wanted to let y’all know that beginning March 1st, I’m taking part in the TRR (The Romance Reviews) Anniversary Party. That’s right, not only do I have another blog tour starting on the 3rd with prizes, but I’m also giving away an ebook copy of Touched by Lightning to the winner of my Q&A on TRR’s site. So I have two buttons for you to check out when the time is right. On Friday I’ll post the schedule for the blog tour which begins on Monday. Is that confusing enough? LOL

Touched by Lightening Button 300 x 225

So back to the song.

Again, I love Avenged Sevenfold. And not just because I’m crushing hard on several of the members. *cough* Their music works for me when I’m writing. I could probably list an easy half-dozen songs that I listen to while I’m working, but when I think back to certain moments in the book, I recall this song being one that stood out the most. My heroine has had to become tough due to her past. She’s afraid to trust, but in the end, she has to actually make herself vulnerable.

I think I’ve mentioned this before, but this whole book is about second chances and working for your own happiness. It’s dark. I know I’ve said that before, but I’m not sure people realize just how dark it is. And I did that on purpose because without that darkness, that pain, how can you truly appreciate the beauty of the second chance Gyda’s been given? Ah well, I hope when readers are in the story they realize there’s a method to my madness.

Anyway, today’s song is Afterlife by Avenged Sevenfold. Enjoy!

Touched by Lightning Playlist 4

Here it is, time for What’s Playing Wednesday again.

Touched by Lightning is out now through ARe, Amazon and Ellora’s Cave if you haven’t picked up your copy yet. We’re also only one day away from the end of the Superhero Scavenger Hunt, so if you haven’t entered to win, you’d better hurry!

I’ve made it no secret that Gyda and Brit’s story is one of painful pasts and strong emotions. For the most part, this book wrote itself with little input from me, but when I got to the end, to the big dark moment, I needed a little help. That’s where my music came into play. (Pun intended.)

As y’all probably know by now, I listen to music all the time. When I’m writing, when I’m sleeping, when I’m reading. It’s just a part of who I am and I’ve always been this way. I could probably blame it on my grandfather who’d fall asleep listening to his big band music, but I think it’s just one of my quirks. I must have music playing somewhere around me.

I have a big playlist I created for my regular work days and writing times. It’s a mix of reggae, metal, hip hop and a little dance music. It usually helps me in any situation when I’m writing because it’s such a broad mixture of songs. But when I got to that dark moment in Touched by Lightning I needed something a little more personal. So I created a playlist I called “Broody Songs”. Yes, broody because I wanted to sink into those dark feelings to give my characters more depth.

One of the songs on that list is one I’ve loved for years. I remember hearing it in the Natural Born Killers soundtrack, which I had to buy after watching the movie, and while it still conjures disturbing images of Mickey and Mallory Knox, it worked perfectly for writing a few scenes in Touched by Lightning. There’s something so haunting about this song, the vocals all whispery and soft, that it breaks my heart.

So today’s song is Cowboy Junkies’ “Sweet Jane”.
