Hey Stranger

Um, so it feels like forever since I blogged. For some reason, I just can’t seem to come up with anything interesting to write about in terms of me.

Are y’all still here? If so, thank you so much! How’s life been treating y’all?

You know how things just sort of go crazy. You have a set plan in place, a goal in mind that you’re bound and determined to follow and then BLAM! fate throws you a curveball? That’s what it’s been like for me. After the release of Touched by Lightning, I’ve been dodging curveball after curveball. That doesn’t mean I haven’t been ogling sexy men over on Facebook because y’all know that’ll happen no matter what.

But for about three months my creative energy was gone. Oh I tried to write, tried to pretend I was going to have a story finished by April and another finished in May. I even had a spreadsheet with all of my ideas and schedules planned out. Then real life intruded, bold and brash, bullying my muse. Between the EDJ and family crises, my muse was whimpering like a whipped puppy.

Things aren’t better, but they aren’t worse either. I’m starting to finally (slowly) get a handle on things. None of those things that’ve been holding me back have gone away. If anything, they’ve gone from schoolyard bullies to massive giants stomping all over everything, but my muse is fighting back. She wants to write stories with happy endings (and not just of the sexual kind heh). She wants to exert a little control over something even if it’s an imaginary world.

So saying that, I’ve just finished a short story for an upcoming box set called Brought to His Knees. I’m going into this awesome undertaking with ten other authors: A.M. Griffin, Amy Ruttan, Anya Richard, Sabrina York, Sayde Grace, Jennifer Kacey, Felice Fox, Cynthia d’Alba, Tina Donahue and Lynne Silver. I have to say, it’s pretty amazing what eleven determined authors can accomplish and I really think this box set will have something for everyone’s tastes. My contribution to this set is the next story in my Southern Sin series. Don’t worry, we’ll be having a huge book cover reveal and prizes and… you know what? How about y’all follow our Facebook page to find out what’s going on next? We’re having takeovers, giveaways, you name it and we have it 😉

Brought To His Knees

And starting soon, possibly even today (shocker!) I plan to start a series that’s been driving me insane for the last two months. Maybe it has to do with all of the stress that’s built up since January, but I’m going dark and grim with this new series. Oh don’t worry, I still plan to write my shifters in the Cajun Heat series and stories in my Grand Terre world, but a writer’s got to write where the muse allows her, right? 😉

I’m going to try a lot harder to blog more often, but I’m not promising anything because when I do… 😉

So how about y’all? How has everyone been?

Fantasy Man Friday

Greetings, my lovelies! It’s a dreary, rainy day here in south Louisiana, but who cares? It’s Friday, but more importantly, it’s Fantasy Man Friday.

Before I get to that though, here’s what’s going on. I’m still on my blog tour and you still have chances to win at the places I’ve been this week. Check out my contest page (http://danicaavet.com/Contests-Appearances.php) for locations. Today I’ll be at Escape by Fiction (http://escapebyfiction.blogspot.com/2011/09/cbsl-aint-no-bull-danica-avet-book-tour.html) with a review and giveaway (they just keep coming, don’t they?).

Secondly, today over at Darker Temptations (http://darkertemptations.wordpress.com/) with a scavenger hunt giveaway! We have a slew of prizes up for grabs, are you ready for this??

What you can win:
From Sayde Grace – two digital copies of her books

From Cynthia Eden – an ARC of Angel of Darkness or a digital copy of Never Cry Wolf

From Danica Avet (that would be me!!) – digital copy of any one of the Veil series and a set of Romance Trading Cards

From Rebecca Zanetti – signed copy of Fated

From Kristin Miller – digital copy of Intervamption

From Marcella Burnard – signed copy of Enemy Gates

From Katie Reus – digital (or audio) copy of Deadly Obsession and a digital copy of Destined Mate when it comes out in October

From Erin Kellison – signed copy of your choice from the Shadow series

Isn’t that awesome?? I mean, that’s a lot of books! I’m tempted to enter myself, but uh…well, that would be cheating wouldn’t it? Since I know where everything is and all…I’ll just have to watch while everyone else enjoys the game. So be sure to stop by if you’re looking for a bunch of paranormal goodies to read!

And now for the Fantasy Man…rar. I really debated for this one. I had to find a man who spoke to me today. Well, they all speak to me, but some tend to speak more than others, you know? Just like real men. Of course, most of the time they say stuff like “lick my six-pack abs” and “you know you want to bite my thighs”…but there has to be more to it than that, right? *snort* Okay, I lied. What do you think of this one?

*drools* It’s like he’s begging me to tie him up and have my very wicked and imaginative way with him. That happy trail…*fans herself* G-R…GRRRR He brings out the Eartha Kitt in me. Well, not that I really have an inner Eartha Kitt…maybe an inner pervert, but she’s on the surface a lot more than inner and why am I explaining this to you when I could be drooling over this man? Go away now and don’t forget to stop by Darker Temptations.

Happy Friday, y’all, have a safe weekend!

What A Release!

Okay, so I don’t really have anything to blog about today. I rejected several ideas all morning long and finally decided I’d pimp some friends out (because I’m a good book pimp like that).

This week is a book release frenzy, so I hope you have a paper and pen ready to take notes!

First off, Rebecca Zanetti’s debut release, Fated comes out today from Kensington Publishing! If you remember, Rebecca was nice enough to stop by last week for an interview (which I had so much fun with) and a giveaway. If you weren’t one of the lucky ones to win an ARC (like me), I recommend you go out and buy Fated.

Cara Paulsen does not give up easily.  A scientist and a single mother, she’s used to doing whatever it takes to protect her daughter.  But “Whatever it takes” has never before included a shotgun wedding to a dangerous stranger with an attitude problem…
                                    OR ELSE

Sure, the mysterious Talen says that he’s there to protect Cara and her daughter.  He also says that he’s a three-hundred-year-old vampire.  Of course, the way he touches her, Cara might actually believe he’s had that long to practice…

Next up, is Cynthia Eden’s release in the Deadly Series, Deadly Lies out from Grand Central Publishing. Cynthia is a cool lady with some really great books you won’t want to miss!

She wants to hide the past…

FBI Special Agent Samantha Kennedy is haunted by memories of the serial killer who abducted her. To keep the darkness at bay, she pretends to be a different, more confident woman. This Samantha doesn’t fear every unknown face. So she throws caution to the wind and shares a night of unbridled passion with a handsome stranger.

He needs to uncover the truth

One night isn’t enough for successful entrepreneur Max Ridgeway. He wants more of the sexy, smart, mysterious woman who slipped away before dawn. When they meet again, their attraction is undeniable—until his stepbrother goes missing, and Max realizes that Samantha isn’t who she seems. But they must trust each other to trap a ring of blood-thirsty kidnappers before the nightmares that terrorize Sam become irrevocably real.

As a merciless criminal spins a web of . . .

Then we have the release dates of the Sizzler ladies! Jillian Chantal’s second book with Siren Publishing, Surfer Bride, is being released today and trust me, this is one lady who can make you drown in her story (bwahaha, so did not intend that pun!). *snicker* Okay, getting back to the book! You have to pick it up. Her heroes are muy caliente!

Quincy Holt, a world champion surfer, was in love with a police officer, Fennimore Smith. He dumped her over a rumor that she cheated on him. Two years later, she’s moved on and is engaged to Percy Hicks, a British man that she believes could make her happy. Quincy thinks her fiancé is an antiques dealer but he’s actually a firearms smuggler. A smuggler being investigated by her former lover, now an ATF agent. When Percy’s private plane full of weapons is confiscated while Quincy is aboard and she’s arrested for arms dealing, Fennimore Smith flies to Bali to rescue her and get her to testify against Percy. She turns him down as she has plans of her own. She sets off to London on a quest to trap her fiancé and bring him down. Will she survive her mission? Will her former lover have to rescue her again?

And last, but not least, is the amazing Sayde Grace’s first book in the Moonlight Cravings Series, Untamable which is being released on Wednesday, February 23, 2011. Don’t let Sayde’s innocent southern lady looks fool you, this book is hot and a paranormal at that! You don’t want to miss it!

Waking up tattooed, mated and a werewolf would shock most people but for Siddalee Brighton it’s just another day.

Siddalee has always held a burning hunger for her best friend, werewolf Jasper Gandillion. But she never realized what belonging to the animal within him would mean until he marks her in a show of passion and dominance, awakening the werewolf inside her. Siddalee was the first of many illegal breeding experiments that the Luna Werewolf Nation Alpha, Dane Velham, created and the only one strong enough to stop the monster from torturing other women and creating more experiments.

So with all of these great books released this week, you shouldn’t have a problem finding something sizzling hot to read!

Fantasy Man Friday

I’m singing Another One Bites the Dust this morning because it’s Friday which means we’ve conquered another work week! It’s been an action-packed week…again. I’m not complaining! I’ve had so much fun between interviews and guest appearances and finding out the date of my next release, I’ve barely had time to take a breath. I love weeks like this because it feels as though I’m accomplishing something. What it is, I have no clue, but it feels good, LOL.

Before I get to the gorgeous Fantasy Man, I’d like to announce the winner of the final mask for Ruby’s book. The winner is…Jen B! Jen, please contact me and I’ll try to ship your mask tomorrow. I have to thank y’all for following along on this blog tour. I’ve had so much fun!

It isn’t over either because the next tour for book 2 of the Veil will start on February 28th! I’ll be posting the dates for everything once it’s all settled. If you have a guest blogger spot open, or would like to interview me, I’m cool with that! Just send me an e-mail at danica.avet@gmail.com and we’ll work something out. I have more masks to give away, these completely different from the masks given away for Ruby, so if you follow along on the tour, you could probably win one of those as well!

I’m not going to rhapsodize about the week like I normally do. I’m ready for my Fantasy Man this morning. As I sipped my coffee, I pondered which one I’d choose. I have a whole stable of gorgeous men waiting to be viewed, so you can imagine how difficult the decision process is. Le sigh.

So…here we go. Today’s Fantasy Man is…Well, he isn’t wearing many clothes, that’s for sure. The minute I saw this guy, I thought of Sayde Grace which so isn’t fair. I mean, really, I should be concentrating on him and what he shouldn’t be wearing. I’ll let you look and decide for yourself what should go.

Ah, I see he’s already reading my mind. He knows exactly what needs to go. *fans herself* As you can see, this is another man from the Gods of Football calendar. I didn’t know Australia had cowboys, but day-um! If they look like this guy, I’m moving and I’m taking my bullwhip with me. Okay, I don’t have a bullwhip, but I would buy one. And spurs. Yee-haw!

Happy Friday, y’all! I hope you have a great weekend.

The People We Meet

In continuing with my year-end review, I can’t go another day without mentioning the people. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, the romance writer’s community seethes with wonderful people. If you’re lucky, you “click” with several of them.

This happened to me this year. 2009 saw me going through the writing process alone. Sure, I’d started emerging from my shell (because Danica pushed me out), but I still hadn’t developed friendships. I think it started with my first critique partner. To be quite honest, I’d forgotten I signed up to the Romance Writer’s Community (a place to help critique partners find each other).

Then one day, this lady named Daisy Harris sent me an e-mail asking if I’d like to partner up. I was scared because up until then, I hadn’t really had anyone other than agents read my stuff. It felt…weird. Then I got my first critique. This woman made me crack up laughing at her comments. I wish I could lie and say she found no problems with my manuscripts, but she did. And she made me laugh at my goofiness. Yeah, there were a lot of “you know there’s a line between troubled and crazy…” kind of comments throughout that particular manuscript and I had to agree with her.

Daisy is one of those people who’ll make you laugh and then tear into your manuscript with a vengeance. She points out things you don’t see and doesn’t make you feel dumb for missing them in the first place. I adore Daisy because she’s managed to make me a better writer and helped me see that humor can be a part of the critiquing process.

A month or two after I met Daisy, I met Avril Ashton. Avril is sassy and stylish (she gave me inspiration to move my characters out of leathers and into high fashion) and she loves a strong heroine. I love a strong heroine as well, but up until we started working together, I think my leading ladies were wishy-washy. By critiquing her, I saw what a heroine could be and applied the theory to my own work.

Where Daisy points out the ridiculous and makes me laugh, Avril will point out that though the hero and heroine had sex, they hadn’t even kissed yet. Horror of horrors! She’ll also tell me flat out if she likes my heroine, if my dark moment is gripping enough and not melodramatic. She’s been a rock for me.

But it doesn’t end there. Oh, no. The critique partners aside, I’ve met so many wonderful people online and in real life. At Nationals, I finally got a chance to meet two of my favorite online personalities, Jillian Chantal and Sayde Grace. Southern ladies with sass, they made me feel like one of their own. I love these ladies and can’t wait to meet up with them again.

Then there were my “clicks”. Nora Roberts mentioned that sometimes you meet someone you click with and end up friends forever and ever and ever. I made a click at the conference. A spunky lady named Silvia Arada. She and I spent a lot of time together going to workshops, hanging out at the book signings, and huddling with the Smoker’s Club. We decided at the conference that when we’re both published, we’re going to sit near each other at the literacy signing. It will happen. We know these things.

There are so many people I’ve become close to in 2010. I’ve made so many new friends I wish I could mention them all, but that would take a much longer post. As much as I love to ramble on, I wouldn’t want to bore anyone into drooling all over their keyboard, so I’ll stop here.

The people we meet through our writing journey are people we’ll work with. They’ll become colleagues, they’ll become staunch supporters, and rivals on the NYT Bestseller’s List (We hope!), but most of all, they’ll become friends. They’re people you go to for advice, for moral and emotional support. They’re the people who flat out tell you your characters sound crazy and unbalanced and that is not attractive in a heroine. They’re people who will tell you that you have to take a leap of faith and not to let past problems burden you. They’re the people you’ll want with you for a very long time and if you’re lucky, you’ll have them forever.

What’s Playing Wednesday

It’s another What’s Playing Wednesday when we take a listen to whatever pops up on Danica’s Magical Music Player! First though, I’d just like to thank Sayde Grace for her wonderful interview and remind you that you have until tomorrow to leave a comment to win one of her books! We’ll be announcing the winner on Friday and heck, I might even dedicate this week’s Fantasy Man to that lucky person!

Now for What’s Playing Wednesday! Ah, my Magical Music Player pulled up a good one today! Remember me talking about how when I was little I was given the choice between watching The Blues Brothers and Halloween II? Well, like any goofy 5-year-old, I chose Halloween II. Yes, nightmares ensued. However, it wasn’t much later that I got to see The Blues Brothers. To this day, it’s one of my favorite movies.

One scene I remember well, was this older man singing blues on the sidewalk in Chicago. Mr. John Lee Hooker. Something about his voice caught my imagination and I became a fan. Years and years later (not saying how many), I went out to play darts with my cousin. We were dressed up and looking cute, if I say so myself. Well, the dart board was next to the bar and there was an older man sitting there nursing a drink. My cousin, who’s six years younger than me, was talking and the man said this:

I like the way you walk. I like the way you talk…like a little baby doll.

It wasn’t until I started looking for songs that I realized he totally ripped those lines off of John Lee Hooker. I laugh about it now, but I thought that was the coolest thing anyone could say. Anyway, today’s song is Boom! Boom! by John Lee Hooker.

What a song! This is one of those songs that instantly transports you to a smokey bar. I can almost see myself (many pounds lighter) wearing a tight blue dress, matching gloves as I sashay across the room while this song plays. It has to be a sashay. It can’t be a stroll or a stalk. Or is that just me?

Ah well, I hope you enjoyed today’s song!
