Writing Hangover

If you follow me on Facebook, you might have seen me mention something about cranking out 12k words this weekend. I haven’t done that in months. Mostly because I’ve been swamped by real life and the evil day job. I’ve been trying to sit down for weeks to pound out Primal Dance, the next book in the Cajun Heat series and last week I had every intention of working on that story.

But on Thursday night as I went to bed, I began to brainstorm a completely different story. A contemporary with not a single paranormal character in sight. Even better, it’s a menage a quatre. I know, are y’all shocked? I’ve written a menage before, but this one is really stepping out of my “comfort zone”. On top of that, each of the male characters are anti-heroes. Each and every single one is a bad boy.

And even better, the whole story is loosely based on a very popular book and musical. I’m not going to say which one it is because I’m still in the “with-this-seekrit-project-I-will-rule-the-world” phase of writing. You know, when you’re positive this story is going to be the one that has people storming the virtual book stores to get a copy of it. Heh. Or should I say Muhuhahahaha!?

Anyway, I’ve been working on this story for…three days? Since Friday at least, but Friday was mostly spent on research. My writing method is that I must have character names down and a title for my stories before I can work on the book. However, all I managed to get were the character names before they demanded I start writing. I still have no title for this story, but I’m actually okay with that. Weird, huh? But it didn’t matter because my muse has finally shown up. Y’all know how she is. She was out partying with hotties and forgot all about me, leaving me to flounder on my own. But she’s back now and she’s putting me through my paces, demanding I write, write, write. The last time this happened, I wrote a 80k story in 25 or 28 days. Something wild like that, edited and revised. Yeah. She really knows how to make me work and I wish she’d stop being such a hooker.

So for now, I’ve had to put Primal Dance on the side to concentrate on this contemporary. I’m sorry for my readers who are waiting on Coltrane and Kanda’s story. It’s coming, just a little later than I’d originally planned. Don’t worry though, it will happen. And if I’m lucky, I’ll have the final book in the series ready shortly after. (But I’m not lucky so…)

Oh and before I forget, today kicks off the start of another blog tour of Touched by Lightning. I’m giving away 2 sets of prizes (Order of Themis travel mugs, swag and gift cards). I have some guest posts and interviews as well as reviews mixed in there so be sure to check it out and enter to win!

**Adult Excerpt**

Amy awoke early the next morning, wanting to get out of bed and dressed before Brett woke. She allowed herself a moment to admire his naked body. He was gorgeous, sexy, and holy hell did he know what he was doing in the bedroom. She closed her eyes and let the memory of last night fill her mind. Her fantasies did not do the man justice. Holy crap, he was fantastic. And big. Good God, he had the biggest cock she’d ever seen. But their one night was over and all she had now were her memories of the best sex of her life. With a sad sigh, she gently tried to ease out of bed.

Before she got too far, Brett reached out and grabbed her around the waist. In one swift movement, he pulled her to him, rolled her onto her back, spread her legs with his knees, and pushed into her. Then he just stopped.

“Brett, what are you doing?” she gasped with surprise—and pleasure.

Without a word, he rolled them over so that she was on top of him. Instinctively, she brought her knees up to rest on either side of his waist and straddled him. He put his hand on the back of her head and brought her down to his lips, and kissed her slowly. She moaned into his mouth, the desire to move on him, to ride him was overwhelming.

“Brett, no, we agreed. One night, remember?” She looked down at him, but made no effort to move.

“One night wasn’t enough, Amy. I want more.” His voice was deep, heavy with sleep, and sexy as hell. He ran his hands down her back and gripped her ass, squeezed her cheeks, and then pushed her down on his cock as he lifted his hips to meet her.

“Oh, God,” she moaned. Christ, how was she supposed to think when he was buried inside of her?

“The choice is yours again,” he said, kneading her ass in his hands. “You can get up and we’ll move on like last night never happened, or we can do this again.” He rotated his hips ever so slightly, just enough so that she felt the movement.

“Brett.” She tried to sound serious, but it came out as needy. Amy put her hands on either side of his head and stared at him. His eyes weren’t the normal crisp blue that she was used to seeing. No, they were hazy and filled with desire. How much more did he want? Once? Another full night? It was one of those questions that she wasn’t sure she really wanted an answer to. So, she did the only thing she could – she eased her body up and off him.

Brett grabbed her waist. “Amy, please,” he pleaded.

Excerpt:

Damn. What’ve I done?

Dr. Charlotte James had been watching the arrivals board in the Iqaluit airport for some time. She was so focused on arrivals she didn’t even notice the people coming and going around her. A watched pot never boiled, or so the old saying went, but she couldn’t help it. This was probably the longest she’d ever stood still. In her job there was no time to stand still. In fact, she hated it. She could be doing so many other things. Filing, for instance.

Not that she particularly liked filing. She preferred her organized chaos. However, there were a ton of files on her desk, and Rosie had been pestering her for a week to put them away. Instead, she was waiting here for his flight to arrive.

“Flight 207 from Ottawa now arriving at gate three.”

The past, when it came to Dr. Quinn Devlyn, was where it needed to be: firmly locked away. She’d moved on and she had no doubt his life had, too.

He was, after all, at the top in his chosen specialty, and she was right where she’d always wanted to be.

This time Quinn Devlyn wouldn’t blindside her or suck her into some crazy off-kilter distracting, albeit passionate, love affair.

No, siree.

Her life was good. Not perfect but, then, whose was? Charlotte was happy. Courage.

She spun around and saw the plane taxi in on the small airstrip, blending in with the stark, white landscape of Canada’s High Arctic. The only color out there was the brightly painted houses that dotted the landscape. Her pulse thundered between her ears.

He’s here.

The pit of Charlotte’s stomach dropped to her knees. No. Scratch that. Make it the soles of her feet. Not since her MCATs had she felt this way, as though she was perpetually on the verge of hurling.

She was seriously beginning to doubt her sanity in bringing her ex-fiance up to Cape Recluse. It wasn’t a place where she could avoid him easily. He’d be constantly underfoot and she was dreading every moment of it. Would she be able to resist him? The only time she had resisted him had been when he’d left. When their relationship had ended, she’d never wanted to see him again, but his presence here now was a price she was willing to pay to help out her friend. Get a grip on yourself.

A blast of cold air shook her from her reverie. Her gaze focused on the tinted windows, watching the passengers head across the tarmac to the warmth of the bright yellow airport building. Immediately she picked Quinn’s form out of the group of passengers.

Tall and broad, even though he was huddled down under his collar against the cold. Just the sight of him made her heart beat a little bit faster, her cheeks heat and the butterflies in her stomach go crazy. Her pulse thundered between her ears like a marching band. She hadn’t seen him in five years–not since he’d walked out on her–but he was making her feel like a giddy teenager again.

Don’t let him affect you like this, Charlotte chastised herself. She’d moved on with her life. The wound he’d left in her heart had finally healed.

The double doors opened and he stepped into the airport, moving to the side to let more people in from the frigid cold. He set down his luggage and unwound his scarf.

Damn, he still looks as good as ever. Charlotte had been kind of hoping Quinn’s fast, career-driven lifestyle would’ve caught up with and aged him, but he looked as sexy and charming as ever.

Even from a few feet away she could see there was a bit of gray around his sandy-brown temples, but it suited him. Made him look more dashing and debonair.

Happy Dance

I don’t normally blog this many days a week. Okay, I used to blog this many times a week, but I got lazy. I tend to hit the important days. You know, Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Tuesdays are guest post days and Thursdays…just sort of sit there waiting to have something to report. Poor Thursday.

But today, Thursday gets some good news. I finally got everything in place and have the release date for Playing Doctor (A Crushes to Cravings Tale 2). It’ll come out on Monday, September 16 which is right around the corner! Self-publishing is scary business. I won’t lie. But on the other hand, it’s also exciting. I’ve been writing paranormal books for so long, it feels a little strange for me to write about regular people. You know, people like you and me who can’t turn into something or who aren’t inhumanly strong? Yeah, that’s not what’s happening in these short stories.

And I have even more planned. That’s probably the best part of writing. Each time I finish one story, another character pops up and says, “Hey, how ya doin’?”

That doesn’t mean however, that I’m not writing my paranormals. In fact, I’m halfway through a brand new project I’m working on with four other authors. It’s something I’ve been meaning to write for the longest time and after spending RT brainstorming and world-building, it’s finally coming to life. I’m still keeping it under wraps though. Just because I’m a terrible tease.

In the meantime, check out the Crushes to Cravings series. The first story, Freeze Tag came out last month. Playing Doctor releases on Monday, September 16, but is available for pre-order at Smashwords!

Playing Doctor AReElijah “Eli” Tucker loved Dixie Champagne from the time they were young only to have his world ripped apart by a betrayal that cut deep. Vowing to have his vengeance on her, he bided his time until she returned to town. It took ten years but seeing her again revives feelings he thought long dead and it takes all of his considerable willpower to exact his revenge. On the woman he still loves even now.

Dixie Champagne worked hard to keep her reputation clean, to break the mold her mother created and she did it by leaving Grand Terre. Going back home means possibly seeing her one-time childhood sweetheart again, but she’ll risk it to help her sister. What she didn’t expect was to have dinner with Eli or that she’d end up having the most erotic experience of her life, only to have him destroy her afterwards.

These star-crossed lovers will have to discover the truth of their past to have a future together.

Excerpt:

From Chapter Two: (Levi’s POV)

The bell rang and Al was out of the room in a flash. Jimmie Allen and Brody tried to talk to me, but I ignored them and followed Al. It took me a moment to find her in the crowded hallway, but when I did, I didn’t waste any time going to her. She was standing at her locker.

I cautiously approached her. “Got a minute?”

She slammed her locker closed and walked in the opposite direction.

“Al!” I chased after her.

She spun around and faced me. “I’m sorry, do I know you?”

Ouch, that was harsh. “I guess I deserved that.”

“Oh, you deserve a heck of a lot more than that, Levi,” she said angrily.

“I know I do. Look, Al, I’m real sorry. Can you please let me explain?”

“I’ve been waiting three years. This had best be good.” She clutched her books to her chest and tapped her foot impatiently.

I took a deep, shaky breath. “Dad wouldn’t let us visit. He said he didn’t want to worry about cleaning up after our trouble making ways.”

“And your Momma wouldn’t let you use the phone? Or did you just forget how?”

Had she always been this feisty? “I have no excuse for that.” I shoved my hands in the pockets of my jeans and stared at the ground. “I’m sorry, Al.”

“And what’s Tucker’s excuse?”

“He doesn’t have one either.”

“I gotta get to class.” She turned her back on me again and proceeded to walk away.

“Ali!”

She stopped cold and just stood there, her head down and her back still to me. I’d never called her Ali before. Had I crossed the line?

Excerpt:

Donnie watched as she tucked a strand of hair behind her ear. He smiled. “Do I make you nervous?”

“No.”

He studied her for a moment before cocking his head to the side and asking, “So, why do you do that thing?”

“What thing?”

“That thing with your hair. You’ve done it every time I’ve seen you,” he said.

Teghan felt the heat rising inside her as she looked at her feet and back at him. His eyes glimmered with desire that, she guessed, rivaled her own. She swallowed hard and reminded herself he was off limits. She’d just made things right with Alex, and there was no doubt that if she broke Alex’s heart again, her brother, her father, and their friends would never forgive her. It was something she wasn’t willing to risk.

But oh, how she wanted to feel him. To place her hands on his hard abs and feel his muscles tense beneath her touch. As he approached, she watched his body, seductively outlined by the light. Her breath caught in her throat when he reached out, took her hand, and gently pulled her to him. It was as if they were two halves of a mold that fit together perfectly. She sucked in a breath and held it. Was he going to kiss her? A small part of her wished he wouldn’t, while the rest of her screamed for it.

Donnie cupped her face in his hand, caressing her cheek with his thumb. Teghan’s eyes fluttered closed at the feel of his lips coming close to hers. It was like the time she’d stuck her finger in a light socket; a jolt of searing hot energy shot through her body, but then eased away, leaving her stunned and aroused. “We shouldn’t do this,” she whispered, her lips brushing against his as she spoke.

“Do you want me to stop?” he said.
