Property of Milly Taiden

Talia Barca stared gloomily at her drink. How would she ever survive the next time she saw her ex-husband? The rat bastard.

“So what are you going to do?” her cousin, Nita Islas asked. The soft question broke through Tally’s misery.

“I don’t know,” she muttered and lifted her amaretto sour to her lips. She gripped the cold glass tightly so the shaking of her hand wouldn’t cause her to let it drop. Stupid nerves. There was no real reason to be nervous and yet she was.  So what that she hadn’t seen her ex in years. Her entire family had been invited to her cousin’s upcoming wedding, a wedding he’d also attend. That meant nothing. Okay, it did mean she had to see his dumbass again. To make matters worse, if she didn’t attend she’d look like she hadn’t gotten over him. How stupid was that when she’d been the one to put in for the divorce in the first place.

“Stop thinking so hard, babe.” Nita shrugged her shoulders. Her black, wide-neck top dove to the side and showed off a sparkly bra strap over golden brown skin. “I mean our entire family should know at this point that he was a jerk to you.”

“You already know they think it was miscommunication. Makes shit worse that he’s been great to most of them. That’s why they never really pushed him out of their circle.” She swallowed a gulp of her drink, draining what was left in the glass.

“If my parents weren’t traveling most of the year they’d support you too. This isn’t fair if you ask me. I mean the guy was a dick to you.”

A dick with a small dick. That’s what she’d called him once she’d given up on trying to make shit work. She sighed. An entire week near Paul of wedding festivities was not what she was looking forward to. He had a god-complex the size of Texas. It made no sense since he didn’t have the body or equipment to back that up. Not even something a person should be proud of. He was an all-star asshole.

“I’ll think of something.” Tally sighed. She’d better think of something ASAP or she’d have to decline attending and that would look even worse. She didn’t hide from shit, but Paul was one of those people that the mere thought of him gave her a headache.

Nita slapped her drink on the table with a thump. “What about Mrs. Wilder?”

“Gerri? My neighbor?”

“Yes!” Nita leaned forward. “Didn’t she tell you as we were walking out tonight that she’s running her business from her apartment in your building?” Nita’s brown eyes widened with excitement. “If I recall, she said it’s a matchmaking or dating service or something like that.”

Tally frowned and swept a long black curl behind her ear, trying to remember the conversation. Mrs. Wilder was her older neighbor from across the hall and a lot of fun. They were the only two on her floor and so Tally visited the older woman quite often. The reason was more so she wouldn’t feel alone than Mrs. Wilder being old. Tally didn’t really get along with her family thanks to asshole Paul. Now her days were either spent with Nita or Mrs. Wilder. The older neighbor always had a ton of male visitors. She came from a huge family and she’d mentioned some of her grandsons would be moving in to the building in the next few weeks.

“She did say something like that,” Tally mused.

“Well, there you go!” Nita passed her empty glass to the waitress, grabbed a fresh one and lifted it to her lips. “Problem solved.”

Maybe. Or maybe she’d be in deeper shit if she allowed the elderly woman to mess with her personal life. When it came to men, Tally had some seriously sucky luck. She glanced around the bar that was located a few blocks from her building. The crowd was younger than she cared to be surrounded with, but in a college town, it was bound to happen. At thirty-two, she’d started to feel like a miserable old lady surrounded by hot young men. She didn’t see how her personal life could get any better.

“You need to talk to more men,” Nita said as if reading her mind.

“I’m too old for dating,” she grumbled but smiled at the waitress who’d given her a new drink. “I’m about to get my cat lady starter kit any day now. Men are too much work.”

Nita laughed. “You’re insane. You’re gorgeous! What the heck would possess you to say you’re too old? Thirty is young!”

“Thirty-two.”

Nita rolled her eyes. “It isn’t like you’re ninety.”

“Sure feels like it,” she whispered with the drink by her lips. She winced at how strong it was. Apparently the waitress felt she needed more than her usual dose of liquor. Tally had to agree. She needed a damn miracle.

“All you have to do is stop dating the wrong men,” Nita stated matter-of-factly.

She pinned Nita with a glare. “I thought that’s what I was already doing. I mean I work at a damn lawyer’s office. I don’t date any of those assholes. But why is it that when I meet what seems to be a nice, decent man, he turns out to be some kind of double bastard with a side of dickhead?”

Nita’s brows curved up. “Wearing a suit to work doesn’t mean you should live in one. Cut loose, woman!” She exhaled loudly and pointed a red-tipped fingernail at Tally. “You need to get laid properly.”

“Shush!” She glanced around the bar. A couple of the younger guys threw winks in their direction. Flames of embarrassment heated her cheeks. “You’re going to get us kicked out of here.”

Nita giggled. “What I’d like is to get you hooked up.”

“I’d settle for a date.”

Nita shook her head. “No. We need drastic measures here. You need to get laid.”

“Nita!” She gasped, covering the side of her face with her hand. “Shut up! You make me sound like a desperate cougar.”

“Aw come on, Tally. I hate that you have to worry about a date for a family function. You’re such a wonderful woman. This isn’t something you should be stressing. You should be kicking men out of your door every night.”

Right. Because she was such a wild one. Not. With her black-framed glasses, unruly, curly hair, larger than most women curves, and somewhat bitchy personality, she didn’t really see herself as a femme fatale.

“I think you’ve had too many of those drinks.” Tally smiled and patted Nita’s hand. “I’ll figure something out. I might ask Mrs. Wilder for some help. Who knows? Maybe she can succeed where I haven’t.”

“I like Mrs. Wilder. I don’t care that she can probably chew me into little pieces even at her old age.” Nita scrunched her nose. She twirled the small straw in her glass in circles. “It’s a good thing she likes you, and therefore me by default, because I have heard some crazy stuff about those shifters.”

Tally knew Mrs. Wilder wasn’t your regular granny, but she was such a sweetheart. And she was someone she could share her cake addiction with. They took turns baking different things and sharing with each other. It’s what fed Tally’s chocolate urges and kept her with way too many curves to count.

“Yeah.” Tally sucked down a gulp from her new drink. “Who would’ve thought that I’d become such good friends with a shifter granny.”

Nita grinned. “Why wouldn’t you? She’s sorta bitchy, like you.”

“Gee, thanks,” she said drily.

“It’s a compliment. I’m so tired of these bubbly women that are fake about how they feel. Feel bitchy? Be bitchy.” Nita picked up her glass and pointed to Tally. “This world is filled with too many fake people. You’re not trying to be a copy of anyone, Tally. That’s why I love you. You’re always going to be an original.”

Tally grinned. Clinked glasses with Nita and sipped her drink. “Thanks. So far that hasn’t really brought anything good into my life.”

“It will,” Nita assured her. “Go visit Mrs. Wilder and for once tell her you need help. It’s not the end of the world to admit to needing a man.”

Tally chuckled. “I don’t need a man. Not really. I need someone to be my date for the week from hell.”

Nita shrugged and motioned the waitress for the check. “Maybe Mrs. Wilder will hook you up.” She gasped. “Oh, my gosh! What if she hooks you up with one of those scorching shifters she has visiting her all the time?”

“Now that would be something to celebrate.” Tally giggled. “They are so sexy.  She told me she has anything from bears, to wolves, to big cats.”

“Wow.” Nita sighed. “Bears and big cats. I used to have a best friend who was a bear.”

“Really? When?”

Nita pursed her lips. “When we lived near the mountains for dad’s job with the fish and wildlife department.”

“Was this before you all came back here?”

Nita nodded. “Yeah. We were sophomores in high school. He was so cute with his glasses and almost too innocent face. I told him everything.”

“What happened?”

“My family came back here. I loved coming back here after all the years on the road, but that meant my bear friend was left behind. He and I lost touch,” Nita said softly.

Tally pulled out one of the many cards Mrs. Wilder had shoved in her hand every time she went over to visit. “Here you go. Why don’t you sign up and see what she can get you?”

Nita stared at the clear business card in awe. “Do you really think she can set me up with one of her shifters?”

“Check out the fine print. She’s made me read it more than once. She will set you up with whoever she deems to be the right man for you.” She read the tiny words on the back of the card and adjusted her glasses. “So, you’re pretty much guaranteed a man. I haven’t seen a single bad looking one yet.”

“You have to do it, Tally.” Nita blinked wide excited eyes at her. “I need to know what she does. You’re in need of a date. This really is the perfect solution.”

Tally sighed. “At least you’re not suggesting those other websites that find your ‘perfect’ someone.”

Nita blinked once. Twice. Then burst into giggles. “I’m sorry. It’s not funny after your last episode.”

Tally clenched her teeth. She hated that her mother, of all people, had bought her a membership to a dating site that promised to find her soul mate. She swore that every man they sent her way had to have been rejected by every other woman. There was no way that her soul mate was really a forty-five year old man with seven kids, who lived with his mother, had no teeth and worked a maximum of ten hours a week. No way.

Lovely Friday

I started off this week sick as a dog, but I’m so glad it’s Friday I could almost dance. Almost because this girl does not have the moves like Jagger. Not at all.

Of course because it’s finally the end of the week, it means I’m about to start up yet another week of training. That’s a good thing, right? Learning is always good. If I can keep my eyes open. The only really great thing I can think of to make up for being away from home and my bed a whole week is I get to spend it with my aunt and uncle. I’ve already put in my request for as much kimchee, bulgogi and other Korean dishes as I can possibly think of. Oh yeah, Danica is going to eat well next week.

The worst part of having been sick this week is I didn’t really get to celebrate the release of my erotic menage, Sweetest Taste of Sin. Sure, I posted about it on Twitter and Facebook, but I didn’t do the whole Happy Release Day to me! thing I normally do. So I’m going to do that now.

Yay! Happy Belated Release Day to me!

Okay. Phew, glad that’s over. Well not really. I’m going to post the blurb and buy links as well as my Friday song. *think* I had a few on tap when I started this post but I think it’ll have to be the song that made me think of the title for this short story. Ne-Yo’s “Closer” is such a good dance song and of course it gave me the idea for the book.

And here it is…Sweetest Taste of Sin.

SweetestTasteofSinARe

Logan Guillory finally has what she’s always wanted, a loving, sizzling relationship with J.B. Calhoun. So why can’t she shake her overwhelming need for his twin brother Anthony? Her small town morals tell her it’s not normal to love two men with equal fervor, but not even the risk of damaging her standing in Grand Terre, Louisiana can make her stop wanting to be possessed by them both.

Anthony ‘Ant’ Calhoun had his eye on Logan long before his brother entered the picture, but now he’s lost his chance, or so he thinks. J.B. has other ideas, which includes sharing Logan’s sensual caresses and big heart with his brother. Torn between overwhelming need and fear of the scandal that might ensue, Ant resists with all his might, but doesn’t stand a chance against the needs of the two people he loves most.

Giving in threatens everything they all hold dear, but who can resist the sweetest taste of sin?

About Lea Barrymire

Lea lives in Western New York with her hubby, three children, and miscellaneous critters. Before the rugrats, she lived a life of adventure, following her husband all over Europe with the US military. She’s slept in a car outside Paris, drove six hours just to see tulips in the Netherlands, and knocked ash from her shoes at Pompeii. Now she spends her time in life’s adventures at soccer games, PTA meetings and school plays.

Lea has loved reading from a very young age, spending many sleepless nights devouring books. Science fiction and paranormal were her favorite genres to read as a teenager, and that love bled into her adult life. She started writing during a bout of insomnia, to fill time, and found it filled a creative void. Now she communes regularly with the characters in her head and tries not to laugh out loud when they say something funny.

When Lea isn’t reading, writing or corralling kids, she enjoys watching movies and sciencey shows, or just kicking back and listening to some music.

anglingforlove_msrBlurb:

Arin Walters decides that after ending her long-term relationship with her cheating boyfriend, she needs a vacation in the Montana mountains. She packs her fly-fishing gear and heads off for a week of relaxation and emotional healing.

Brent and Jared have been best friends since childhood. The abuse they suffered as children binds them together. They want a woman to share and build a life with but they’ve been burned in the past.

When Arin shows up at their fishing lodge, sparks fly and all three feel the beginning of something they crave—acceptance and love. Now they must hope that the passion between them is enough to help them leave the past behind.

Excerpt:

Brent’s grunt brought Jared back from his thoughts. Brent was the polar opposite of Jared—probably why they made such good friends. He was stuffy and immaculately dressed, tidy and organized. Jared was none of those things. He was the heart and soul of the pair. He was the messy, unorganized romantic. Brent was the planner and the brains of the operation.

“You’ve known her for, what, two hours? Already you’re in love? Damn, man, this was the fastest yet,” Brent sneered. He raised his eyes off the newspaper for a moment, then shook it out, delving back into its pages.

“Shut your face. You’ll see—just wait. You’re gonna go ga-ga over her nerdy perfection.” Jared threw his head back against the chair and sighed. “I can’t wait to get her between us, man. She’s a little shy now, but I can feel the fire just under her skin. And the best part? She loves what we do. You should’ve seen her talking about her old man and the trips they used to take. She was almost vibrating with the joy of it all. I can’t wait to get her in a stream and watch her face as she hooks the first beast.” He groaned and closed his eyes. “I’m gettin’ hard just thinking about it.”

“You’ve got it bad.”

“I know. Just be nice when she comes down, okay? Don’t do the normal grumpy-puss that scares off all the females. Don’t you want to find someone? I mean, we’ve talked about kids and life beyond bachelorhood.” He slowly raised his head and found Brent staring. “Don’t you want that happiness for us?”

“Of course I do. We’ve talked this to death. But wishing for a girl and finding one are two different things. Just because you want to find a woman to stay doesn’t mean that the next one who shows up single is going to be her. You need to stop throwing your heart out there.”

“And you need to stop keeping yours caged. How is anyone supposed to fall in love with you if you’re grumpy and surly all the time?” Jared could feel his anger mounting. “I can’t do all the work, dude. If we’re going to find someone to love us enough to stay, you have to be willing to try too.”

“You don’t think I try? Really?” Brent sat up. “Who do you think puts you back together every fucking time you get your heart stomped on? I watch you fall for these girls I know are only out to get laid. But you do it anyway, time after time. What am I supposed to do? Fall for them too so we can be bawling women after they leave?”

Bio:

Shae Shannon was born in California where she lived until the age of 13.  Her family decided to uproot and move to a small town in Oklahoma.  It was fate, Karma, or coincidence that had put both Shae and her future husband on the paths of destiny and love.  She spotted him in the back of a pickup truck while cruising town, his hot sexiness capturing her attention and her heart.  One introduction later and she knew that he was her soul mate.  Dustin was also from California, and had grown up only 30 miles from her.

After marriage, Dustin joined the Army.  They spent 9 years in northern New York and 4 years in Georgia. He served 3 tours overseas, and numerous stateside training exercises. It was during the long, stressful, lonesome deployments that Shae found she could escape into imagination and majestically teleport into juicy books. Her most prized gift came in the form of a kindle, sent from her husband in Iraq.  She quickly filled her digital library, and adds to it every week.

They are blessed with three kids ages 16, 10, and 5. Two dogs, a hamster, and a fish make for a chaotic crazy daily routine that Shae handles like a pro, and with a lot of humor.

Needing to branch out more, Shae picked up her laptop and began to write, allowing her boisterous imagination to fly.  After what seemed like an eternity, she finally created her first novel that soon became published by Siren Publishing.  She was finally on the path of her dreams of becoming an author.

Shae currently lives Oklahoma, where the tea is sweet, the grass is green, and people still say ma’am and thank you.  Every summer, they load up the family and head for the lake for swimming and fishing. There is not a water park or swimming pool in the world that could ever compare to a rope swing and a floaty.  The only thing that will change is that Shae will be scribbling and writing as she floats on the water and works on her tan.

When push comes to shove, he turns to his pack and declares war against the panthers in a fight to win her hand.

Excerpt:

Brandon spotted her from across the room. He was thunderstruck and rendered paralyzed. She was the most magically, erotically, sensually, gorgeous woman he had ever laid eyes on. Her movements were like a spell, weaving around her in a web of delight. When he was able to pick his chin up off the floor, he darted in her direction. A low rumble oscillated in the caverns of his chest, threatening to exit in a roar. Mine.

Giselle let go. Dancing was more than fun to her. It was a way of life. Her witch heritage used dance for many spells and rituals. It was part of her being, allowing her to shimmy and sway all stresses away. She was barely aware of the body that had pressed up against her from behind. The movements coming from her esoteric dance partner fueled the fire that had cast inside of her. She ground backward, against the steel structure who met her sway for glorious sway. She dipped down, entwining her arms as she went to touch the floor and arch her way back up. Without skipping a beat, she was turned and embraced in the cage of enormous arms. Her surprise was evident, but instead of her stopping or freezing momentarily, her mouth curved into a flirtatious grin at the violet-eyed, sexy hunk of meat holding her. She began testing him, intensifying her moving and curving against his body. She fluttered her way down his towering length, keeping her face a breath away from his body until she reached his crotch. Giselle lingered there for a moment, continuing her grinding to the beat of the song, before slowly making her ascent. A feral look flashed in his eyes.

DJ Piper In The House

I managed to catch Piper Trace for a moment to get her to emcee for us today. I hope you enjoy her offering! ~ Danica

It’s interesting, because even though I’m not a huge music fan in general, it strongly inspires and shapes my writing. To me, it’s the lyrics and mood of the song that do it for me–so I really think I’m responding to the music more as poetry. My current work in progress, or should I say my PERPETUAL work in progress, is a MMF menage with BDSM elements. The song that inspired this book is “Hallelujah” sung by Rufus Wainwright. I think I listened to this song over and over again constantly for about a month straight while commuting to work and forming this book idea in my head.

The song itself doesn’t have much to do with the book or the plot, but it’s the sad sexiness of the song that spoke to me. The raw and unapologetic emotion of it. The “wow, we are both completely weird and fucked up, but I still love you and you do something to me in the darkest parts of me that I can’t explain and I can’t seem to let you go”-ness of the song. Lines like: “Maybe there’s a God above, and all I ever learned from love was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you.” If you think of that analogy–how to shoot someone who outdrew you–and put it in the context of love and a relationship, that’s the kind of complexity and gut-wrenching connection I was trying to create in this book.

I wanted Ford and Evie to have that sort of genuine and emotionally powerful relationship. I hope I achieved that. The third in their threesome, Charley, has some similar angsty love going on with Ford and Evie too–with most of the angst aimed at Ford–but he’s really there to provide these two strong, broken, stubborn characters (Ford and Evie) with some glue to hold them together and allow them to actually work. Ford and Evie’s pasts and hang-ups are a recipe for volatility, but thankfully Charley an buffer that and he’s very easy to love.

So Charley’s their glue, and he makes for good glue because that rough-hewn, sweet, biker stud just LOVES to get really sticky with Ford and Evie.

Watch the video. I need a moment. …Is it hot in here?  Oh and don’t miss the excerpt of Come When Called below! The book is not out yet and it may be a while. It’s not even in edits yet because Ellora’s Cave can’t seem to pry a final version of it from my picky, pervy fingers. As soon as there is progress, I’ll let you know!!

Excerpt:

There was something strangely exciting about a man kissing her, enjoying her body with his, while he thought about his lust for another man. While he talked about touching another man’s cock.  It was hot, and Evie was nearly ready to climb on top of Charley and satisfy herself while he finished his story.

Her movement against him seemed to carry a message of invitation for Charley, because he jerked the sheets down roughly, exposing her breasts, and covered a nipple with his mouth, sucking hard. She gasped, arching against him, burying her fingers in his hair while she fought to untangle her other hand from the sheets and reach for the crotch of his worn jeans. He released her, kneeling up to pull off his shirt with one hand as he unbuckled his jeans with the other. Tossing his tee-shirt to the floor, he peeled his jeans off, sinking to the bed to push them off his feet, and then he was on her again.

He covered her mouth with his, kissing her deeply, pushing his tongue into her with abandon, making noises of hunger, of need, of pleasure. His hands were everywhere.

They both struggled to pull free of the sheets, her trying to get out of them, him trying to burrow under them with her. Somehow they managed to kick them to the end of the bed so their naked skin could have full contact, head to toe. Warm skin against warm skin. Bodies wrapping around each other, arching against each other. They never broke the kiss. Charley seemed to want to get as close to her as she wanted to get to him.

He slid his hands around to her ass, pulling her against him as he thrust forward, groaning into her mouth. Damn. He felt so good. So strong and hard and naked. His weight against her made it impossible for her to think of anything but the way she felt at that moment. She didn’t think of her fear about John. Her confusion and longing for Ford. Her plans for the future. She only thought of what she needed from Charley—what they needed from each other. And it wasn’t sex—it was a feeling of belonging, love, connection.

She pulled her head back, breaking the kiss, breathless from the whirlwind of it. “Make love to me, Charley,” she whispered into the hollow of his neck.

“I can’t.” His voice held something close to despair.

“Yes you can,” she insisted, wrapping a leg behind his knee in a futile effort to keep him there.

“No.” He pulled his head back and clamped his hands to her shoulders, pushing up from her. “I can’t, and, goddammit, stop asking me to or I will.” He paused to catch his breath. “I don’t think Ford would like it.”

“I don’t belong to Ford!” She was surprised at her own willingness to sleep with Charley, knowing he was right.

“You do belong to him, Evie. We both do.” Charley made a frustrated sound, dropping his head against her shoulder. “Don’t make me argue with you about it when you know it’s true.”
