Rock My World

On the Sixth Day of Pre-Release the author gave to me…

…Fusion music! The inspiration for some of the tunes mentioned in the Unveiled Seductions series, including book four, which is being released on December 4, 2013.

Anya Cover From the first time I envisioned the character of Xbal Montegro, jaguar god, sex magic practitioner and hero of Jaguar in the Sun, I knew he was going to be a music promoter. It fit with the story line since the Midnight Café, setting of the series, had branched out from tattooing to become a hangout spot, complete with stage shows. Besides, I loved the idea of the kinds of fusion music you might find beyond the Veil, a place where old gods, fey, weres, vamps and all kinds of other characters of myth and lore live.

The first mention I made of music in the series was a Vamp-Ska band… and I had a gypsy-ska song my daughter had introduced me to years before as the inspiration. Neither of us could remember exactly which song it was (might have been Coffee, God and Cigarettes by Mischief Brew, but I seem to remember more of a ska beat to the song) so I went looking on YouTube to see if I could find it. Of course, I found something even better (and a new favorite group) in Gogol Bordello. Here’s sort of what I had in mind when I dreamed up Vamp-Ska, although Gogol Bordello is usually described as Gypsy Punk:

In Jaguar in the Sun the heroine, Cassie, goes to Xbal’s office to proposition him and there’s a band in the lobby, jamming. This is the description of what she hears:

Immediately she was bombarded by a blast of sound coming from a group of people lounging in the reception area, each one with an instrument in hand. This was music unlike any she’d heard before, with a driving, almost discordant backbeat provided by a couple of guys, one with a pair of Congo drums, the other with what looked like a plastic tub. Above it was overlaid the wail of a bagpipe and the counter-beat of a bass guitar. And flitting through it all were the high, sweet notes of a wind instrument—a piccolo by the sound of it—diving and climbing between the other sounds, weaving them all together into something magical and strangely compelling. Enchanted, she paused in the vestibule and let the door swing shut as the music washed over her, somehow soothing her nervousness and, at the same time, heightening her anticipation.

There are a number of really good Celtic fusion groups and sounds, but being attracted to the sounds of Africa, this fusion of Celtic and Gwana music really appealed to me:

I love all kinds of music, as you might have figured, so this has been so much fun to dream up and research. I’m already cruising YouTube looking for the next inspiration! Tomorrow on the Seventh Day of Pre-Release, I’ll be at Amy Ruttan’s blog talking about my idea of where the old gods go when they disappear from our world. I bet you can guess where that is!

Book four in the Unveiled Seductions series.

Cassandra Solinar has a bucket list and jaguar god Xbal Montegro is on it. About to undergo an essential rite she won’t survive, she wants to wring every ounce of pleasure out of the time left. Including discovering if Xbal’s sex magic technique is as good as rumored.

It’s no hardship for Xbal to accept Cassandra’s invitation for one erotic encounter, but far more difficult to let her go once he gets a taste of the explosive passion between them. Now he’s determined to hold on to her, no matter what.

Cassie can’t tell Xbal the truth about what she’s about to do. It’s illegal, but without her death the entire world will perish. It’s a job she’s been preparing for from birth, but the loss will be greater now. For in Xbal she finds a soul-deep connection she doesn’t want to lose, and the one thing she made a point of not putting on her bucket list—love.

Friday Fun

Well, it’s fun for me, not so much for Atlanta fans. Sorry guys.

I didn’t get much sleep last night because I wasn’t going to bed until the final second ticked off the clock in the 4th quarter of the Saints-Falcons game. Call me paranoid, but too much happens in the last few seconds of the games, especially this season. But we pulled out a win and woo-woo! 9-2 baby! Now we just have to battle Seattle next week. *sigh*

Not going to talk about football this entire post, promise. I probably lost some of y’all at the first sentence. Your eyes glazed over, drool started to pool at the corner of your mouths and the rest of this blog post will be lost. Ah well. Sorry about that.

However, since the Saints played last night, that means I’m reasonably free on Sunday. I’ll still end up watching as many games as I can. That Denver-New England game promises to be a good one, but because my boys aren’t playing, I can work. Yeah, fun right? Meh. Eh, actually it isn’t all that bad. I have a book to edit and another one to finish in order to meet my year-end goals. So I can start 2014 with a clean slate. No works in progress, no half-finished stories that are driving me crazy. I can kick off January with a new book and let it flow.

At least that’s the theory. Not sure how it’ll work but I’m going to give it the old college try!

That means this weekend is dedicated to writing. So is the day before Thanksgiving and the weekend after Thanksgiving. If I’m not in a tryptophan coma. Making a note to myself now: Don’t gorge on turkey. Eat the Korean food. We’ll see if that sticks.

The song I chose to kick off the weekend sounds pretty epic. It’s Avenged Sevenfold’s newest single “Shepard of Fire”. I really like it and it puts me in the mood to write. Win-win situation!

Happy Friday, y’all!

Post 997 – Friday

Can I hear an Amen? Because yeah, it’s finally Friday. Man, it’s crazy how long a single week can feel. And that’s not even mentioning how long 10 minutes can feel, forget a full minute while you’re staring at a clock. Meh.

But it’s Friday and I have a full weekend planned. Hair. It’s about time to get rid of the blonde bangs. Not sure yet what I’m going to do, maybe tone it down a little since I don’t have anywhere to be until next October. I can start training my hair to like colors other than red and blonde. We’ll see though. Usually I don’t decide what I’m going to do with my mop until I’m sitting in the chair staring at myself. Of course that’s usually when I have these epiphanies about it. “How about…” and my stylist will either talk me off the ledge or say “I can do that”.

Other than that, I plan to write. Yup. I have a story that’s just about halfway finished and it needs to be finis before Thanksgiving so I’m going to work on that as soon as I find the time. It kind of helps that I’ve read through all the books I wanted to read in the last three weeks. Danica has been a reading machine lately which isn’t a good thing for the writing side of things, but I’ve finally hit a wall.

We’re only three posts away from the 1,000 Blog Post Giveaway Celebration. That’s just awesome. I hope y’all will stop by to visit and to enter to win the humongous prize I’ve gathered for y’all. Trust me, it’s huge. And be sure to tell your friends it’s happening next Wednesday, November 20!

For today’s Freaky on Friday song, I’m going with one that I love to sing along with. It’s another one of those songs that makes me want to hit the open road and just roam. So far everything I’ve heard from this band I’ve liked, so check it out and let me know what you think.

Post 996 – The Countdown

Happy Wednesday!

Yup, as you can see, we’re now counting down, or up, to the magical 1,000 blog post! Yay! *throws itty-bitty bits of paper into the air otherwise known as confetti* Yay!

Okay, I’m done. Obviously we’re at post 996. I can’t even fathom what I could’ve wrote 995 posts about. *thinks* I’m pretty sure most of them were about writing, men, music and other goofiness. But I did it and y’all probably know me better than people I work with. In fact, I guarantee y’all know me better than my coworkers. I can’t exactly sit around with them and extol the virtues of a half-naked man because I think there’s probably a law about that somewhere.

Anyway, because today is What’s Playing Wednesday, I have to do something completely goofy (which is totally me by the way) and go with a song that I can’t abide simply because I heard it so much in my youth. Now, the worst part about this song is I thought I left it behind in the 80s. I really did. But when I was in college hanging out at my friend’s house, his younger brother arrived with his music blaring, showing us all how cool he was. And you know what song was screaming out at us from his speakers? Yup, this one.

So enjoy a flashback to a time when keytars were awesome (which they’re totally not) and you had big hair, or you went home. Yup, here it is…Europe “The Final Countdown”.

Takin’ Off Music

I’m not going anywhere. Just wish I was.

It’s Friday. Not a three-day weekend or anything, but it’s Friday and it seems I’m looking at another somewhat laid back weekend. I say somewhat since Saturday morning is going to be spent running around all over the place bringing my dog to the groomer (she looks like ewok), getting my oil changed (hopefully by some hot mechanics so I can daydream instead of go catatonic from boredom) and if I can squeeze in the time, get a pedicure. Oh, how I hope I can manage that!

It’s been a crazy-ass week. Seriously. I thought last week was bad, but this one wasn’t much better. If I didn’t color my hair, I have no doubt I’d be showing nothing but gray. Or if my hair was really cool, it’d do that instant-silver thing that Rogue’s did in X-Men. But my hair isn’t cool, so I’ll be recoloring it next weekend.

But the purpose of this post isn’t to bemoan my bad hair, my bad week and all the errands I have to run. No, it’s about getting out, getting away. From everything and everyone. You ever have the urge to hop in your car and just hit the road? I do. A lot. I love to drive. I love to see new places and commune with the highway with my music blaring. It’d have to be in a cool ass car though. Not what I drive now. And I’d have great hair. And cowboy boots because you have to have a good pair of cowboy boots when you hit the road. ZZ Top playing at top volume, fuzzy dice dangling from the rearview mirror…and of course there’s a hottie (who isn’t a creep, serial killer, punk or otherwise not cool) lookin’ for a ride on the side of the road.

And that’s what brings us to the point of this post. There are a lot of songs I like to listen to while I’m driving (minus all that stuff that isn’t happening). Depending on my mood, those songs can be fast and hardcore metal. Read that as angry or needing to get pumped up to deal with something I don’t want to. The songs can be slow power ballads because I feel a need to reconnect with my youth. They can be dance hits which means I’m behind the wheel pretending I got moves like Jagger. But sometimes they’re songs that make me chill out and relax.

Gerry Rafferty is one of my go-to musicians for that. “Right Down the Line” and “Baker Street” are songs I will leave Tool and Avenged Sevenfold to listen to. Can’t help it. Then there’s another band that sort of has that same laid back, chilled out, hit the open road feel for me. That’d be Queens of the Stoneage. Maybe it’s because the singer was on Anthony Bordain’s No Reservations once and I liked how chilled out he was in his desert town with the music studio that wasn’t anything fancy. Whatever it was, when I hear their music, it instantly puts me in that zone.

Today’s song is called “If I Had A Tail” and it helps soothe my nerves. That’s my Friday gift to y’all.

Chill out!

Because What Does It Say?

I’ve been going to physical therapy for my shoulder since June.  Five months later, I’m pretty comfortable with the physical therapist and his girls so it should come as no surprise that we talk. I also make them laugh. Mostly because I say things like, “I thought we were friends. You’re not supposed to hurt your friends” when they give me a new exercise to do.

So when I was driving to PT one afternoon and flipping through the radio stations and heard something that made me blink, I had to share it with them. I’d heard this song before, a while back just like everyone else, but I never thought it would be playing on what amounts to a Top 20 channel. (Satellite radio is organized that way so you can catch all the current pop hits without all the crap.) I paused on this channel because…Well, I was astounded. I’m sure back in the day people thought the same thing of “Pac-Man Fever” and “Disco Duck” but this just kills me because it’s hilarious.

If you haven’t seen it already, this is a group called Ylvis and they have a song called “What Does the Fox Say”. And really, what does the fox say? Really y’all. Really.

Anyway, enjoy!

Hail To Friday

I had good intentions this week. I was going to actually blog a lot this week. Okay, maybe not a lot, but I was going to blog more than I did. Then life did what it normally does and went batshit crazy. Work has been hectic and I’m telling y’all now, I’ll be glad when it calms down some. Then I sent Touched by Lightning, the superhero story I’ve been working on for months, to my editor. Now I’m waiting. But while I’m waiting, I’m working on a new story so hopefully that’ll keep me occupied enough that I don’t become neurotic over the fact that my editor has my life in her hands.

Not to be melodramatic or anything.

I’m hoping this weekend will be a good one where I can just relax and catch up on sleep. God, I miss sleep! But y’all really don’t want to hear all that. I know.

So this is what’s going on. I still have the Big Cocks & Broomsticks Giveaway going on even though Halloween is over. There are gift cards and other swag available from several blogs. Be sure to check that out. Also, every month I hold a Fan Appreciation Giveaway on my Facebook fan page. This month’s drawing is done, but you can always “like” my page to be entered for November’s giveaway. I think it’s going to be gift cards so people who’d like to use them for Christmas gifts can. Or they can be greedy.

And then I’m going to hold a big giveaway here on my blog on the day I hit my 1,000th blog post. Yes, you read me right. One thousand blog posts! Isn’t that whacked? I’m not sure what I’m giving away just yet. Maybe I’ll ask some folks if they’d like to donate something and just give it away. Hm, maybe I should actually plan this, huh?

Anyway, because it’s Friday and because I like music and missed my What’s Playing Wednesday post, today’s Freaky on Friday song is by the very sexy Avenged Sevenfold. *drools* I heard this song twice this morning so I figured it was meant for me to share it with y’all.

Let’s get this weekend started! Crank it up!

Bad Girls

I’ve been such a bad blogger this year. I’m sure when I get to the last post of the year, I’ll think “But I didn’t blog much this year!” because I haven’t. Maybe it’s a natural part of diving deeper into my writing. Which I haven’t been doing. Or maybe it’s just laziness. Whatever it is, I do apologize for not blogging as much as I used to.

I’m trying to fix that. It might even be a New Year’s Resolution. Which I never follow anyway. Oh well, looks like y’all are out of luck!

This is going to be a busy weekend, by the way. This afternoon, I’m heading to Lake Charles, Louisiana for the Ellora’s Cave show and book signing with some great Cavemen. You can tell I’ve been waiting for this for a while, right? I was so concerned back when I found out when it was because of the shoulder. But I know if I can fly to Ohio to be crazy at RomantiCon, I can definitely cheer and go crazy over the dancers. *cough*

Once I get back to town tomorrow, I’ve got to jet to my nephew’s 2nd birthday party. He’s so darn cute I could just eat him up with a little spoon! I can’t be late for that, so chances are I’ll be sleep deprived when I get there tomorrow. Add onto that edits I’m expecting from my CPs and it looks like I won’t be getting any rest this weekend. But hey, how does that saying go? No rest for the wicked? And I can be very, very wicked when I want to. 😉

So to come back to the title of this post…Because tonight’s show is going to be hunky men doing their thing on the stage, it’s going to be great. And although this song is so played out because of Bridget Jones’ Diary and I think it was in Magic Mike as well, it’s perfect for the craziness that’s sure to go down tonight.

This is my Freaky on Friday song dedicated to the Cavemen show tonight. I hope to do a full RomantiCon blog post next week, so look for it!

Stuck In My Head

I’m not doing a recap of RomantiCon yet. I’m still trying to recover from the trip (yes, it was that amazing) and get myself in order. I have edits to finish on my latest WIP, another WIP to start and finish before the end of November and another to start immediately after that. Can we say Danica is going to be a busy girl?

I say I’m not going to recap yet, but today’s What’s Playing Wednesday song is something that keeps replaying in my mind because of RomantiCon. Or rather because of the cavemen and their Old Hollywood performance. There’s just something about men in skin tight, black pants dancing on and around chairs that gets my motor running.

So today’s song is one that was played during the performance that nearly brought the house down. Those cavemen sure are talented and add in Tom Jones’ sexy voice and it’s a recipe for insanity.

Happy Hump Day!

Mellowing Out

It’s Friday. Yay! This has been a crazy week. I’m trying to wrap up the final chapters on my current WIP and it’s like pulling teeth. My characters don’t want it to end.

“Look D, I know you want to get this story to your editor and all, but I don’t feel as though I’ve had enough time to properly express my angst and love.”

Shut up, characters! Just STFU and let me write THE END already! I’m really not angry with them, but if one of them comes back with a “But what about this traumatic moment…” I’m going to scream. I’m so close to the end. At the very most, 8k out from calling it done. I’m so ready to get this story off my hands and into those of my CPs and beta readers. I’d like to have it submitted to my editor before RCon.

Because oh yeah, that’s the other thing I’ve been preparing for. RCon starts next week. Four crazy days of fun, laughter, sexiness and more naughtiness. I had to pack a box of things I’m having shipped directly to the hotel, make sure it all fit in the box first and then start…oh man, I forgot to add something to my box *makes a note*. See? I’m going to be doing this for the next five days. Hopefully I don’t forget anything important. Like underwear.

So that brings us to today. It’s time to get ready for the weekend and I have so much to do, I’m feeling a little frantic. I decided to go with a mellow love song. I know, it’s not my usual thing. I say this even as I listen to my scream-o stuff, but there are some love songs that I enjoy. Ki-Ci and Jojo are one of those groups I like just about anything they put out. This song though, is the one that I’ll sing.

Happy Friday y’all!
