This month I’m having fun with acronym songs. There are a lot out there and they’re not all extremely modern songs either! Last week we had Harper Valley PTA which I loved as a child. This week, we’re jumping two decades into the 80s.

I’m sure if you’re familiar with Michael Jackson’s music, you already know which song I’m going to play. But back in 1982, this was the best album ever. I was six. I remember my cousin had this album and we would roller skate in her garage, or jump on the trampoline and sing along. Of course, we switched Michael Jackson out with Kool and the Gang, but that’s beside the point.

P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) was a great song. I’m not saying it was better than Thriller or anything, but it was one of my favorite songs on the Thriller album. It brings back memories and every time I hear it, I have to sing along.

So enjoy!

Remaking Michael Jackson

Okay people, snakes, broken toes, and magic kitties aside, it’s time for the summer music remake series! Yay!

Last week most of you chose Metallica’s version of “Whiskey in the Jar” which means for the first time since I started the series, the remake won! Wow! Who knew there were so many Metallica fans?

Anyway, today we’re tackling the King of Pop. I can freely admit that when I was a child, Michael Jackson was the coolest musician ever. As I got older, I found that I liked his music less and less. Now, now, before you decide to pelt me with white gloves, I’m not saying he was a bad musician. The man was beyond gifted. A talented musician and dancer, he was a true performer. See? I can be good!

It was hard for me to choose which song I wanted to show off. One of them was actually featured on American Idol. David Cook performed Chris Cornell’s (of Soundgarden and Audioslave) version of “Billie Jean” which I adore. However, I had to go with this song because it reminds me of my nephew.

The band Alien Ant Farm remade Michael Jackson’s “Smooth Criminal”. I have to say I love this version. It’s fun, it’s exciting, and that guy can hit those Jackson-esque high notes. I also love the video.

So what do you think?

This Is Thriller

I was seven years old when Thriller came out. I was a huge Michael Jackson fan at the time and trust me, I had to listen to this entire album. I distinctly remember jumping on a mini-trampoline with P.Y.T. playing in the background.

Then the video for Thriller came out. At the time, it was the scariest, coolest video ever. EVER! Vincent Price’s creepy voice over, the zombies, the awesome dancing…it was fantastic.

I couldn’t think of a better way to end Horror Music Week than with this song and video.

What did you think of it? Did you have trouble sleeping at night because of Vincent Price talking about creatures crawling in search of blood?
