Rock My World

On the Sixth Day of Pre-Release the author gave to me…

…Fusion music! The inspiration for some of the tunes mentioned in the Unveiled Seductions series, including book four, which is being released on December 4, 2013.

Anya Cover From the first time I envisioned the character of Xbal Montegro, jaguar god, sex magic practitioner and hero of Jaguar in the Sun, I knew he was going to be a music promoter. It fit with the story line since the Midnight Café, setting of the series, had branched out from tattooing to become a hangout spot, complete with stage shows. Besides, I loved the idea of the kinds of fusion music you might find beyond the Veil, a place where old gods, fey, weres, vamps and all kinds of other characters of myth and lore live.

The first mention I made of music in the series was a Vamp-Ska band… and I had a gypsy-ska song my daughter had introduced me to years before as the inspiration. Neither of us could remember exactly which song it was (might have been Coffee, God and Cigarettes by Mischief Brew, but I seem to remember more of a ska beat to the song) so I went looking on YouTube to see if I could find it. Of course, I found something even better (and a new favorite group) in Gogol Bordello. Here’s sort of what I had in mind when I dreamed up Vamp-Ska, although Gogol Bordello is usually described as Gypsy Punk:

In Jaguar in the Sun the heroine, Cassie, goes to Xbal’s office to proposition him and there’s a band in the lobby, jamming. This is the description of what she hears:

Immediately she was bombarded by a blast of sound coming from a group of people lounging in the reception area, each one with an instrument in hand. This was music unlike any she’d heard before, with a driving, almost discordant backbeat provided by a couple of guys, one with a pair of Congo drums, the other with what looked like a plastic tub. Above it was overlaid the wail of a bagpipe and the counter-beat of a bass guitar. And flitting through it all were the high, sweet notes of a wind instrument—a piccolo by the sound of it—diving and climbing between the other sounds, weaving them all together into something magical and strangely compelling. Enchanted, she paused in the vestibule and let the door swing shut as the music washed over her, somehow soothing her nervousness and, at the same time, heightening her anticipation.

There are a number of really good Celtic fusion groups and sounds, but being attracted to the sounds of Africa, this fusion of Celtic and Gwana music really appealed to me:

I love all kinds of music, as you might have figured, so this has been so much fun to dream up and research. I’m already cruising YouTube looking for the next inspiration! Tomorrow on the Seventh Day of Pre-Release, I’ll be at Amy Ruttan’s blog talking about my idea of where the old gods go when they disappear from our world. I bet you can guess where that is!

Book four in the Unveiled Seductions series.

Cassandra Solinar has a bucket list and jaguar god Xbal Montegro is on it. About to undergo an essential rite she won’t survive, she wants to wring every ounce of pleasure out of the time left. Including discovering if Xbal’s sex magic technique is as good as rumored.

It’s no hardship for Xbal to accept Cassandra’s invitation for one erotic encounter, but far more difficult to let her go once he gets a taste of the explosive passion between them. Now he’s determined to hold on to her, no matter what.

Cassie can’t tell Xbal the truth about what she’s about to do. It’s illegal, but without her death the entire world will perish. It’s a job she’s been preparing for from birth, but the loss will be greater now. For in Xbal she finds a soul-deep connection she doesn’t want to lose, and the one thing she made a point of not putting on her bucket list—love.

Release Day Fun

How can a Monday be fun? Well…really, it’s not supposed to be, but today is the release of my newest Crushes to Cravings Tale, Playing Doctor.  It’s not, contrary to belief, about a doctor, but about two people who played together as kids and as nature would have it, became romantically involved until they’re torn apart by cruelty. The story bugged me for weeks until finally I put my big project on the side and worked on it. Then it just flew out of my brain and onto paper.

Playing Doctor AReElijah “Eli” Tucker loved Dixie Champagne from the time they were young only to have his world ripped apart by a betrayal that cut deep. Vowing to have his vengeance on her, he bided his time until she returned to town. It took ten years but seeing her again revives feelings he thought long dead and it takes all of his considerable willpower to exact his revenge. On the woman he still loves even now.

Dixie Champagne worked hard to keep her reputation clean, to break the mold her mother created and she did it by leaving Grand Terre. Going back home means possibly seeing her one-time childhood sweetheart again, but she’ll risk it to help her sister. What she didn’t expect was to have dinner with Eli or that she’d end up having the most erotic experience of her life, only to have him destroy her afterwards.

These star-crossed lovers will have to discover the truth of their past to have a future together.

You can pick Playing Doctor (A Crushes to Cravings Tale 2) up at Amazon, ARe and Smashwords.

And that’s not all the excitement going on. The Loving Dangerously Blog Hop is now over and the winner has been picked. I had a giveaway on my blog as well and that winner is… strawberryrosered. I’ve offered up reader’s choice of backlist in this giveaway and Strawberryrosered will get to pick what book she’d like to win. I want to thank everyone who participated in the hop and remind you of the other two hops coming up. Just peek over at the sidebar at the Six-Pack Stud-a-thon Blog hop starting next week and the Big Cocks and Broomsticks Blog Hop starting in October. There are lots more prizes to win!

Finally, the weekend was a blast. Sort of. Wrote 8200 words on my big project on Saturday, drank more coffee than I should have and then nearly had a heart attack during the Saints game. I should’ve known it was going to be bad when I developed a horrible case of heart burn earlier yesterday that didn’t go away. Nope. It just got worse as the game progressed until I swore I was going to die by the last 5 seconds of the game. I survived though, so obviously I’m in decent health.

Bless you boys! You never allow us to have a dull game.

What did you do this weekend?

Dean’s List Release Day Fantasies

Woot! I love Release Day! I’ll love this one even more if I manage to avoid jury duty, but that’s a story for another day.

Right now, it’s all about my hero Dean and his bevy of beauties. We all have fantasies. I think I talked about this somewhere…*frown* I feel as though I wrote that line in an interview or a guest blog…oh well. But we do. Like, I keep having this recurring dream that the Wayans brothers will knock on my door (as well as every other lady in the Cabal) and ask if they can make a movie out of our Fondled and Gobbled spoofs. And our stories will be on the big screen in all their messy, hilarious glory. Either that, or we’ll be banned from a dozen countries for being too outrageous and then we’ll become notorious and everyone will want us to write more spoofs and I’d finally be able to hire a pool boy. I don’t have a pool, nor do I plan to have one but I want a pool boy.

Okay, I have more realistic fantasies. I have sexual fantasies, I have rich and famous fantasies, I have Please-let-me-sleep-until-6-in-the-morning fantasies. But the bottom line is I have them. I don’t act on all of them, or many of them, but I have them as does everyone else. Dean and his women act on his fantasies. And theirs. They live them out in vivid, sexy detail and I was just the hapless writer who got it down on paper.

So here’s to Dean and his women *toast* I hope everyone who decides to give this story a chance, enjoys it in the same spirit it was written. And to get us in the mood…here’s a little Ludacris to enjoy while you tell me: What is your fantasy? (It doesn’t have to be sexual or naughty, just something simple.) Don’t forget I’m taking part in THREE, yes three giveaways this week! The What In The World Is Danica Thinking giveaway (win Danica Avet swag), the Big Cocks and Shamrocks Blog Hop (Swag, books and a grand prize!) and the Dean’s List Scavenger Hunt ($50 gift card and a copy of Dean’s List). Stop by to enter!

Release Day for Immortal Love

Woot-woot! Today is release day for Immortal Love (Olympus, Inc. 1)!

You can hear it, can’t you? You know I’m on the verge of bursting into song. I can’t help myself. There’s nothing more exciting than a new book release. Hm, I don’t suppose the caffeine pills help much either, but hey! I’m supposed to be hyped up, right?

Today I’m kicking off the start of my blog tour over at Doris O’Connor’s blog talking about kick-ass heroines (my favorite type of heroine) and giving away a copy of Immortal Love to one lucky commenter. Don’t worry, there’ll be more chances to win in the next two weeks and there’s more at stake than a book. Bwahaha. I hope to see some of y’all there!

Meanwhile, sing along with me:

Release Day Music

Hey y’all! I can barely hear you over the loud music roaring in my ears. It’s Release Day over here in Danica Land and I let the heroine of my third Veil book, Lifestyles of the Fey and Dangerous have at the music player.

I’ll be discussing Noelani Fayard, aka Shade, aka Lani, in greater depth on my group blog, Four Foxes One Hound. Stop by to learn more about her. I will tell you this much, Lani’s story is darker than the other two books in the Veil Series. I suppose it was bound to happen considering she’s an assassin and her hero is none other than former Eturian general, Malachi Cromwell.

The music on my playlist for this book was darker, edgier than the other books. I mean…Lani would’ve probably killed me if I broke out the ABBA to write her story! Instead, I had to depend on my heavy metal to get me through, which is what she’s making me play for y’all today.

The band is called The Used and the song, appropriately enough for an assassin, is called Blood On My Hands. The video is a bit gruesome, but the song kicks ass, especially for Lani and Malachi’s story.

Oh and she won’t let me forget this part. In honor of her release day, we’d like to give away a mask painted especially for Lifestyles of the Fey and Dangerous as well as a set of romance trading cards (www.romancetradingcards.come) for the entire series. Leave a comment for a chance to win!

Release Day!!

And the crowd goes wild! Not really, but that’s what I hear in my head. Hey, I’m a writer, it’s what we do!

So today is the release of the second book in my Veil Series, Succubus-in-Waiting, and I’m ready for some fun! I’ll admit it, this book was one of my favorites to write. I adored Connor and Piper, so I hope everyone else does as well.

Did I mention that today’s also Mardi Gras? Woo-hoo!

I know I said I was going to keep with the Mardi Gras theme for What’s Playing Wednesday, but it seemed wrong not to play the most heard Mardi Gras song on Fat Tuesday. So here you go, the supreme Mardi Gras song 🙂

If you saw the whole video, then you saw a lot of parade pictures. Yes, today is the day for shouting, “Throw me something, Mister!” and in honor of that and my book release, I’m over at Falyn Donaldson’s blog for a special book release um, parade. That’s right! Now, everyone knows that New Orleans is infamous for people who flash for beads. I’m on Falyn’s blog asking you to flash me…with pictures of hunky men.

Yes! Go on over to read all about it and be sure to keep your eyes peeled for nummy men who might catch my attention so I’ll “throw”  you something. Sound like fun? I hope it is! I look forward to seeing y’all there!

Happy Mardi Gras!

Cajun French: Grattons

Before I get into the Cajun French lesson of the day, I have two, no three announcements to make. First of all, the winner of an ARC of Fated by Rebecca Zanetti is…Lara Dunning! I have to say, I loved that interview and all of the fun comments. I hope to have Rebecca back some day…perhaps with her next release? We’ll have to see.

The second announcement is that today is your last chance to win a hand painted Mardi Gras mask made especially for my release of Ruby: Uncut and on the Loose. I’ll be over at Avril Ashton’s blog for an interview. I’ve had so much fun on this blog tour and I hope you have as well. It’s been an absolute pleasure! Now go comment for a chance to win! 😉

Last, but not least, I have a release date for the 2nd Veil book, Succubus-in-Waiting. It’ll be released March 8, 2011, which is Mardi Gras! Woo-hoo, party time! Probably not, I don’t party like I used to, but that’s okay! I’ll spend it online goofing off instead 😉 There’ll be another blog tour with  yet another giveaway for that book, so be on the lookout for those dates. If you’d like to have me over, just drop me an e-mail!

Okay, now to the really fun part of today’s post. Cajun French. I think my next book’s release date has put my mind in Mardi Gras mode. The first thing that popped into my mind was how much I adored my one Mardi Gras experience in Gheens, Louisiana. It’s a one-road community and we used to laugh that the world revolved around Gheens, but they sure know how to put on a Mardi Gras celebration.

Now, there’s a lot of preparation that goes into this event. Hogs are butchered which sets up the best tasting heart-attack-on-a-table  you’ll ever have. Most of you know fried pig fat as cracklins. We call them grattons (pronounced gra-tons, roll the gra and it rhymes with batons). If you’ve never had grattons straight from the pan, you haven’t lived.

When I say heart-attack-on-a-table, I mean it because the batches of grattons are tossed onto a protectively lined table and a box of salt poured over them. You want them when they’re hot. *stomach growls* I haven’t had fresh grattons in years. The closest I’ve come is when a vendor brings in a batch from two hours away. They’re slightly warm and still kind of soft, but nowhere near as good straight out of the pan.

It doesn't look appetizing, but mais! They're like crack!

Those are grattons. It’s a much cooler word than cracklings. When I hear cracklings, I always think about Clash of the Titans when Calibos says, Release the Kraken! And as much as I’m all for eating squids and octopi…it just doesn’t compare to grattons.

So, the next time you’re at the store and you see a bag of cracklings, you can now call them grattons and have everyone stare at you. Now, if you don’t mind, I’m going to drool over the thought of a table of grattons with no one to share it with 😉
