5 Things I’ve Learned

Last week I was tagged in a post by the lovely Angela Addams. The post was about the five things I’ve learned this year. Wow, could we possibly expand that to maybe 100 things I’ve learned? It seems crazy to me that it’s already the middle of August when it feels like it’s still May or June.

So to my five things:

1. I’ve learned that being quiet and unobtrusive only makes me appear standoffish and arrogant. I really worried about the conference, thinking I wouldn’t be able to break through my defensive walls and talk to people. Boy, was I surprised! I became a social butterfly (who went to bed early every night). I discovered a new confidence in myself and it stuck with me even after my plane landed in New Orleans.

2. I’ve learned the harsh lesson of putting all your eggs in one basket. The agent SNAFU has taught me that no matter how concrete things may appear to be, you still have to protect yourself by not pinning all your hopes on one other person. Your writing career is valuable. People will want to read your stuff and though it’s a heady feeling to have someone say they love your work, you have to use common sense. Don’t burn bridges before you’ve made certain the bridge you’re about to cross is rock solid.

3. Sometimes you need a break. Writing is fun, it’s supposed to be fun, but when it starts to feel like a chore, you need to back away from it for a little while. No,  you don’t need to shave your head and join a spiritual commune, but you do need to recharge your batteries. Get away from the computer. Leave Twitter, Facebook, and your writing groups alone for a little while. Leave your heroine hanging from a cliff. Go for a walk, go away for a short weekend, go shopping, or get your nails done. Do something to give your body and your brain a much needed break.

4. I’ve learned that coffee is my friend. As the year has steadily trudged on, I’ve become more and more dependent on it. Almost more so than chocolate. How do I know this? I drank sludge during the conference with a smile on my face. This was the kind of coffee that puts hair on your chest, but I braved it because I needed that caffeine. There was a time when I wouldn’t have dreamed of drinking coffee but once every few months. It wasn’t my thing. Now, I can’t live without it. I’m already planning to bring my own coffee to New York next year. I have to have my Community dark roast. No more sludge for me!

5. Finally, I’ve learned that there are friends to be made from every genre of writing. It’s been nearly a full year since I started taking my on-line presence more seriously and I’ve met some wonderful people. I’ve grown my network of friends, some of whom I had the honor of meeting in person, some I’m still on virtual terms with, but I couldn’t imagine continuing on this journey without them. You’re all the best!

Now it’s time for me to pass the buck. Are you ready? Three lucky people will get the chance to share their learning experiences with the rest of us. I’ve chosen: Lynn Rush, Daisy Harris, and Silvia Arada. What have you learned so far this year?

The Versatile Blogger Award

To my  surprise, I was given another blogging award, this time by Marsha A. Moore. Thanks for thinking of me! I feel special (and I don’t have to worry about what to blog about this morning!!).

Now, here are the rules:

1. Thank those who loved me enough to bestow this gift.
2. Share seven things about myself.
3. Bestow this honor onto 15 newly discovered or followed bloggers–in no particular order–who are fantastic in some way.
4. Drop by and let my fifteen new friends know I love them.
Sooooo….seven things about myself. Where do I begin?? (you know how much I love talking about myself!)
1. I talk to my animals like they can understand me and will talk back…if they ever did, I’m afraid I’d have a heart attack.
2. When I was 10 years old, my brother broke the middle finger of my left hand. Yes, my middle finger, which meant that I wore a splint that looked like I was flipping the bird to everyone. It was awesome.
3. My mom says I used to know the words to all the songs on the radio (as well as most of the commercials) when I was about 3. It annoyed them to no end.
4. I hate…hate…HATE…to dust. I have dust bunnies the size of boulders under my bed.
5. I can only take so much “girl talk”. I think 30 minutes is my limit. After that I’m looking for the nearest exit.
6. If I could get away with wearing sneakers or flip-flops for all events, I would. (I carry slippers with me when I’m forced to wear heels.)
7. I’m afraid I might be going through a “nesting” phase…God forbid I’m becoming domesticated! *shudder*
So now I get to pick people to share this award with. Yay! Without further ado:
Romancemama – She covers the 3 S’s of blogging: sweet, sassy, and Southern. Need I say more?
Daisy Harris – Insightful blogger with a twist of snark.
Allison Pang – Hello Kitty and bacon fanatic with lots of snark. (Not sure how she’d feel about a bacon wrapped Hello Kitty…best of both worlds?)
Tawna Fenske – Hilarious blogger…please, please check her out!
KAK – Constantly cracks me up with her comments.
Stacy McKitrick – Always happy to share embarrassing moments with me (she never leaves me hanging by myself!)
Lynn Rush – Sweet lady with a regimented blog (Throwback Thursdays are my favorite!)
Tammy Gallant – Busy lady with a blog that asks those important questions…like, what would you Karaoke to?
Naked Heroes – Yes, I said NAKED HEROES…’nuff said!
Angela Addams – Sweet lady who lets me rant at/with her!
Stacey Espino – Spicy bloggess…seriously spicy!
Jeffe Kennedy – I’m new to her blog, but she takes wonderful pictures of her desert home (from a soggy south Louisiana perspective, they’re awesome!)
Jillian Chantal – Adding her to my blog now that I know she has one, but I already know she’s an awesome lady!
Jus Accardo – She’s fabu with a lazy…I mean, a sleepy dog who provides me endless amusement.
Eden Glenn – She has wonderful Fantasy Man Mondays…which is a great way to start the week, you know? Between her fantasy guys on Monday and my fantasy guys on Friday. Like a sandwich…
So, that’s all 15 of the blogs I follow. I hope you’ll give them all a look-see to find out for yourself how awesome they are! Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to look for this week’s Fantasy Man. *sigh* My work is never done!

Creative Writer Blogger Award

So Stacey Espino got me back for the Lovely Blog Award I nominated her for a few weeks ago. I’m going to have a lot of fun with this award, I tell ya and I hope those I choose to return the favor to do as well.
Here’s how it works:
I have to list either six outrageous lies and one truth or vice versa and nominate 7 friends for the award.
Here are my lies…or truths:
1.) I try to coordinate my hair color with the color of my car.
2.) I once stuck a bead up my nose because a friend told me she’d done it.
3.) I plan to be a dirty old lady.
4.) I once dressed as a Catholic School Girl and hooked up with Hard Hat Man for Halloween.
5.) I lied about having children in college to get out of going to a night class.
6.) I have dance moves that would make Beyonce look pathetic.
7.) I have a butt that makes JLo’s butt look small.
So can you tell me which are lies and which are truth?
My Nominees for Best Creative Writer are:

Tag, You’re It

I’ve been TAGGED! Tammy Gallant was oh so gracious as to tag me and since I was puzzling over what to blog about anyway, I’m glad to play along.

So here is how the game is played. There are 5 questions and you must answer each question 5 times and then TAG 5 people to play. Here are my…er 5 deepest secrets (as if I had any left anyway):

Question 1: Where were you 5 years ago?

  • I, like Tammy, was having a nervous breakdown.
  • I was working for a court-house in the juvenile department which meant I got to see a lot of horrible things.
  • Trying to make sense of who I wanted to be, dreaming about writing and all that “nonsense” that I now take so seriously.
  • Partying more than I should have (drinking, concerts, etc.)
  • Spending way too much money at Hot Topic.

Question 2: Where would you like to be 5 years from now?

  • Yup, here too Tammy and I concur. I would love to be a NYT Best Selling Author
  • Traveling to Europe…for researching Alpha heroes with schexy accents.
  • Owning a home with a natural gas generator (this is a very big deal for me)
  • Watching over the nieces and nephews my brother had better give me.
  • Getting a new tattoo to celebrate my latest hot book release

Question 3: What is (was) your to-do list today?

  • Working on the WIP
  • Blogging about something entertaining…probably didn’t manage that one yet again
  • Having Subway sometime during the day
  • Relaxing with my dog and a good book
  • E-mailing, or texting, everyone in the bachelor party with party info

Question 4: What 5 snacks do you enjoy?

  • Chips and salsa…I’m a chips and salsa fiend!
  • Carrots, broccoli, and cauliflower with ranch dressing
  • Doritos (original flavor)
  • World’s Best Chocolate ice cream from Baskin Robbins
  • Almonds, walnuts, pecans…well, mixed nuts really

Question 5: What 5 things would you do if you were a billionaire?

  • Pay off all of my family’s debt and set them up for life
  • Buy a huge plot of land and let the family build houses on it if they wanted to
  • Travel all over the world
  • Get a delicious boy toy…I mean, er…
  • Probably go broke buying cars…have I mentioned I’m a car whore?

Now for those poor, poor souls who I’m tagging:

Tagged Romancemama
Tagged KAK
Tagged Alison Pang

You ladies can thank me later 😉

How’s everyone else’s Wednesday morning?
